Trading in a car with engine light on?

    Hi folks,
I'm looking to trade in my car, but the engine management light is on.
Typically, are dealers likely to accept it? Or will they ask me to get it fixed first?

    Cheers.

Depends on the dealer I guess. Is the trade-in going to scrappage?

If it is than the engine light doesn't matter.

OP, it really depends on the car, it will matter a whole lot more trading in a 2006 5 series against a 2009 one than if you're trading in a 01 Punto against a 2009 5 series.

    It's a 2005 C200 CDI with 96k on the clock.
I'd probably be buying a similarly spec car of about £5000.

Depends on what the light means, you would need to get the fault read to see what it's recording, could me a small or major problem, dealer is unlikely to take a risk on a car worth so much money that there could potentially be a new engine required.

Start by just asking the dealer?

See, I don't have a dealer or car in mind, I'm deciding whether or not to get it fixed before I trade it in. It's going to cost me £1000 to fix, but the car is going ok.

Call in to one or two and have a chat about their trade-in/scrappage deals.
Sorry I can't be better help but haven't done this particular transaction myself.

You have obviously had it diagnosed already - what's the issue?

Your trading in a 2005 Merc for a car worth 5 grand? You'll get f all value there anyway even if the Merc was immaculate. With the check engine light on they may well not want to take it at all. Best to be honest and advertise it for sale privately as is and see what you get for it.

Probably about right from a Merc dealer.....

OP, chances are a dealer will take it if you tell them, but they may knock the price of the car back more than the value of the repair just in case.

Best to talk to any dealer you have an interest in doing business with.

Can you remove it and remap it instead? Or is that not possible on that car?

DPF can be expensive alright. Is there no regeneration you can do to get it cured in the short term at least.
Are you trading for a car worth 5,000 or for one thats 5000 + merc.

Surely a good Indy can do it for half the price and reset engine management light too? Would make a whole lotta differnce to the trade in value I woulda thought!

I'm taking it to a Indi tomorrow for regeneration. But the light has been on for a while now, I think that it's going to be beyond that by now.
I bought it for £8300 a year and a half ago. I'm just looking to sell it and get a 320d or something similar. Without spending any (or much) money (I've just bought my first house and I'm perma-skint).

Depending on how bad the filter issue is maybe a reset would make the engine light issue 'go way' temporarily, although I'm a strong believer in Karma so that may not be the way forward.

I've had the light turned off before but I think it came on again within a couple of miles. I know more about the problem now though. I only wish I knew more about it at the time.
Having said that, the light did go off by itself for a few months before coming back on again, so I may wait to see if that happens again. I get the feeling that this is what happened before I bought it, so Karma can maybe go feck itself :)
