Are you calling from an Irish skype account? That number is correct and will ring on a standard phone. Try a mobile, its free fone anyways.

If you call a US toll-free number via skype, nearly sure you'll be charged, but with many other providers that's not the case.

Impossible to dial a 1800 number on Skype. If we had 0800 numbers it would be possible. I don't understand this at all, all of our non geo numbers start with a 1. Useless. Ring from a mobile or landline if mobiles are blocked (which they often are).

+1 800/866 etc US freefone numbers are free on Skype, and so are +44 800 numbers to the UK. I use them everyday for conference calls.

You absolutely can't due to some stupid numbering allocation.

1-800 XXX XXX is a freephone number
+353 1 800 XXXX is a local dublin phone number.

Basically, it wasn't ever considered that someone might want to call such a number from abroad and they clashed the codes with Dublin's area code!

There's some possibility that Dublin may be moving area codes as it's short of numbering space. It's likely to be easier than extending 01 to 8-digits.

Something like moving existing 01 numbers to 031 and allocating new numbers in 032,033,034 etc and just requiring either 8-digit or all digit local dialing.

That might make dialing Irish freephone etc from abroad dialable eventually but it could be like 5 years off.

Other services like Blueface behave exactly like an Irish landline so you can dial 1800 etc etc
