Bord Gais Service Q

Bord Gais offer a boiler service for €99 which includes VAT, but from what I can ascertain from previous visits that they have made to my boiler they are not Bord Gais employees but sub contractors, to that end might I as well not just go for a 'golden pages' gas boiler service (Bord Gais approved of course)? I googled them and first popped up<snip> they charge €85, now I don't work for this company nor have anthing got to do with them, but if I went with BG could I end up getting above, but paying BG €99 instead of above €85??

you would'nt know who they send out to you. BG appliance servicing was probably the best company to have service or repair your boiler up untill april 2010. you paid a premium because the engineers ( subcontractors ) were very highly skilled and constantly training on the latest developements in the industry. A third party now operates this contract under the name " BG home team " and pay the lowest bidder to do their work. I will let you make your own mind up.

I find the private companies are way better when it comes to servicing and repair of heating system, for the simple reason is that you get more value for your money. If there is something wrong with the system the private companies will stay there and sort it out for you straight away while the BG lads will tell whats wrong and be gone, because they have to meet there targets every day or else it's not worth their while working fro the big company.
but I have seen lately is when the heating engineer services the boiler for bord gais before he leaves the house he is putting a sticker on the boiler with his own name and number on it so he is hoping he will get any follow up work from the household:pac:
All gas engineers are all well qualified and all have to be RGII resistered so your best bet is to look there and give the little man some help in these hard time and forget the big companies trying to have the whole monopoly to them selfs.

    What qualifications do they have?

Op, I would ask around and try to find a local Rgii with a good reputation there's a lot out there, I wouldn't go by price as a lot of new(cheap) Rgii have no background or training in gas apart from a 18 day course:eek:

I agree with Roy on local engineer but having a Rgii card doesn't automatically mean they are gas engineers.

I agree .people with no installer background are spoon fed through these courses paid for by fas.I wouldn't let them near my boiler!

My general feeling is pensoners who want trust use board gais for there services. Generally joe public would be better off getting a registered contractor board gais approved or rgii approved.

From what i see you dont get much for your buck with board gais. You get the min where as a contractor is out to make money so will have a good look and may also advise you on potential problems.

Nothing stopping you getting a second opinion then

The lads a right. Log on to www.rgii.ie put in your area and start calling. Ask questions about there qualifications and tell them you want proof. The board gais servicing is sub-contracted out to Sierra who call them selves Board Gais Home Team. They in turn hire other contractors to do there work but board gais still call the shots. I have been to some bad boilers were Board Gais have been, 1 example was a lady was told here boiler was knackered and she needed a new one Home team told her he could do it the next day for €2100. I called out that evening and re-set the high limit stat, got an air lock out of it and away she went. So it only cost her a few bob and a cuppa. That saying I know a couple of lads that work for them and they are top notch. It's the luck of the draw who you get.
