Insurance - refund after full licence?

I got insured two months before I passed my test and got the full licence. When I went back to my insurer, they said they would not give a partial refund of the cost which I had expected given that I was now a fully licenced driver.

Is this the norm? Do you normally get money back when you pass your test?

Perhaps I should have checked the small print. Anyway, would be interested in other people's experience with this.

You should be able to cancel your policy for a refund and take out a new one.

I did get refund (decreased direct debit actually) with Aviva, even tough it was 5-6 months after policy start date. Axa also refunds after passing the test. I would have a look at canceling terms and condition, especially if you bought your policy from broker, but just after 2 months you may be better off with buying new policy.

You should get a rebate on your insurance cost, because your quote was on a learner permit and NOT a full licence.

Now that you hold a full licence you should be entitled to a rebate.

If you cancel a policy so soon after taking it out you may incur a penalty.

Its sounds like you were expecting your policy to be amended that cost for the entire year would be put onto the Full licence rate. What they do is amend your policy from the date you passed your test. so the refund or reduction in your DD's depends on how long is left on the policy.

Dont forget you were driving insured for a couple of months on a prov lic.

And finally it depends on your circumstances. Young female drivers wont see much of a difference because they get much better rates compared to young males.

was this not in the European courts recently (last week or two) .... its deemed discrimination and as a result female insurance will be increased by 25% and males will be reduced by 10% (on average)

You are entitle to either get a refund if you have paid for the full year or get a reduction in direct debit payments from the time you got your full licence (Well Done).
If the insurance company is saying no to this your options are to make them do it be getting the help of the Financial Services Ombudsman.

or you could end your policey with them. This may incur a penalty. But may still be cancelled out by the savings made in going to another company.

Passed my test about 6 months onto my insurance, with quinn, told them and got over 300e back in the form of reduced direct debits. Yes, you should definitely be due a refund, how much depends on a lot of factors. As others have suggested, I would suggest going to the ombudsman if they don't sort you out.
