Just finished sorting out cvs for interview & was wonderin why people are choosing not to put their date of birth on the cv.
I really dont care what age they are, if they can do the job. It was more annonying than anything, & it made me curious to figure out their age.
Personally I would have preferred ppl to have included their date of birth

Its optional, and if you ask its age discrimination!

So erm let me get this straight, having a DOB on a CV is annoying yet you still want people to add it on their Cv's?

    You're misreading it
The OP is organizing the interviews and finds it annoying the dob is not there

I think loadie meant its more annoying not having a DOB on a Cv because he/she is curious about the age the candidate is.

I have my DOB on my cv but have been told many times to take it off that there might be some bias towards age even tho recruitment & selection should not involve any stereotype

My boss never interviewed anyone over 40. He was 40 and did not want anyone older than him.

This is the reason the law is there. Its discrimination to age define.

However my own personal view is prejudice is there and if i interviewed a 60 year old and felt he could not lift 20 barrels of beer from a celler a day no amount of experience will get him the job.

So i dont include my DOB on the grounds they can take me as they find me and not what they think before they see me.

It is optional - along with things like marital status and gender. As you say it is easy enough for an employer to figure out from job dates etc. I assume people who don't put it on feel they may be discriminated against, either because they are too young or too old.

DOB is as previous posters said, entirely optional on CVs.
However one of the things that a lot of people are surprised about is that it is now illegal in this country for recruitment agencies to record your date of birth on their systems any more.
So if they parse your CV into their database they cannot take out the date of birth, but if they keep a copy of the Cv as you have provided it to them then they can keep a record of it.

    Strange but true. :)

Legally, your age holds absolutely no relevance to potential job performance or suitability for said job.

Therefore, it has no right being on a CV these days.

It could influence a potential employer as to who they invite for an interview.

Why are you curious to know their age?

    Why?

I learned the skill of CV reading (ie looking for holes in 'em) from a previous manager, and take very little notice of things like that. I'm be focussing on what actual experiences the person has had, and if there are any unexplained gaps. DoB is irrelevant.

fair point about lookin for the persons actual experience, which is all i was doing as well. I just found and maybe i am bloody nosey:P that i spent time tryin 2 figure out their date of birth.

Anyhow selections are made lets just hope i dont get a bunch of geriatrics:pac:

I know you're probably being flippant but I hope I never have to go for an interview where you work. A persons ability to do the job is irrelevant based age/gender/martial status. Sooner everyone realises this, the better.

Apologies for being flippant, of course age does not matter, as neither does gender etc., that was never my point & maybe i just didnt say it clear enough. I just wondered why ppl left age off their cv as i havent had to interview in years & ironically position is only on offer cause person is retiring. As most employees here have been here for years, havent had to look at cvs in years. It was just a major change i noticed thats all

What do you mean by 'geriatrics'??? People nearing pension age or someone a few years older than you?? I know myself when I was fresh out of school at 18, I would've considered anybody over 30 to be a geriatric....now I'm in my early 30's and would personally love to smack someone who would consider me as 'old' lol :)
I myself have never put down my DOB on my CV. Not only is is completly none of your business, but what if the CV got into the wrong hands? The person's ID could be compromised and open to identity theft, I know this is a bit extreme but you never know. A date of birth is often used as a positive identifer when business is conducted over the phone, for say, mobile phone account records or car insurance etc.
Anyway, since my leaving cert year is down on it, one can work out what age I am roughly, give or take a year, since the average person would sit the leaving around 17/18.

personally i think if a woman is in her 30's and married on her cv that some places (not all) will discriminate as they know only too well she is probably going to have babies. its a sad fact but its totally true and happening. women also still get paid slightly less than men as well because of this. example. i work for a very big successful american engineering company. 5 of us in office. 4 of us women earn 25k and 1 man earns 27k. he was the last in and on a work night out drunkedly told me what he earns. now we all have degrees and experience. me personally i have 7 years experience in my field way more than him or the others. i think we should all earn the same but he earns 2k more cos he is a man plain and simple. even he thinks its disgraceful

Of course your age matters regarding how long you will be able to do the job.
If you are hiring for a position that you hope will be filled for many years to come, interviewing a bunch of 64 year olds is quiet pointless.

Scandalous !!! Why not bring that up with the boss? Ask them why does your colleague's Y chromosome constitute an extra 2K over the other 4 of you who lack it?? (Sorry I know it's probably way easier for me to ask you than for you to actually do it. . . grin and bear and be thankfull to have a job in these tough climates, it's still scandalous though )

When did he start working there?

The Rigger, according to her post Common Sense said in her office the 5 of them all have degrees and experience, she has 7 years experience, way more experience than the guy who earns 2K more than her, and that he was the last in the door. Now this is why I think it's scandalous.

    Ok. Doesn't answer my question.

2 years ago, he is the last in too. thing is he is really sound. so i dont want to go and say he told me what wages he is on. wages are meant to be confidential. me and the girls are not loosing to much sleep over it and are happy we have jobs. the guy in question told me that at the interview he told them he wouldnt work for anything less than 27k and they jumped. he was told not to talk about wages to anyone but obviously with drink and craic flowing he slipped up.at my interview i was told 25k or nothing. same for the others. anyway it does annoy me but you cant beat big companies. the heartbreak is i spent 6 mths training him in and he was on more than me. as im longest there i train all new staff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 712 ✭✭✭Devia

So he negotiated his wage up and you didn't? Nothing illegal about that.

Have you got into talks about a raise for yourself if you're so experienced? If you're performing as well as the man there's no reason why you shouldn't be given a better contract.

I always put mine on but judging by questions I got in interviews, almost nobody read it.
Asking me why on earth I hadn't had a job at 15 (they didn't mention the age, that's how I reckon they didn't look at it) and why I had no massive employment history at 17 I felt was a bit much, sure loads of kids babysit or whatever but short of that...
but he earns 2k more cos he is a man plain and simple. even he thinks its disgraceful
Ah come on. I was the only one in my area to negotiate my salary, that's why I got 2k higher than the lads. You don't ask, you won't get it.

So are you job-hunting? (IMHO you should be, with that level of experience and salary). Labour economics is all about demand and supply ...
