Hello to all from a lurker in these here parts.

Having rooted my HTC Desire at the weekend i am looking to find out from someone more savvy than me as to what are the best and fastest ROMS out there?

Main puropse for rooting and loading custiom rom
    1. To achieve better battery performance
    2. To maximise internal memory. (No preloaded HTC crap that i will never use etc).
    3. To act the GATOR and tincker with gadgets!!

have installed clock work recover through unrevoked. Have NAND unlocked also. I also have made a backup of my current HTC sense rom for safe keeping in the event i have to go back and reload the sense ROM.

Thanks in advance on any tips that maybe forthcoming!

I've CyanogenMod7. Seems to do the job. Its Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread.
Once you add the default power control widget to the home screen, you can save lots of battery by turning everything off.

oxygen 2.0.1 is a class Rom. very basic with no extras in it and battery life is very good

I have Cyanogenmod 7 also. I installed the DarkTrmeor Script to activate A2SD+ also.

This allows me to move the dalvik-cache to my SD card and install all apps on the SD also. You need an EXT Partition on your SD though.

There is an app called S2E on the Market for this. Its in a simple to use GUI. Only for CM7.

If your have unlocked your NAND, S-off; you should install the CM7 HBOOT from alpharev. That will maximise your phone internal data partition without having to partition your SD card for more app space.

Definately recommend CM7. Its excellent and has lots of features for tinkering around with. Latest version is RC2.

LeeDoid is excellent. Lots of bells and whistles but still significantly better battery life than stock. Even though it has Sense and a few more apps, its way way lighter than stock, I still have loads of space left and none of my apps are moved to SD card.

I have not tried too many other, might give the above a shot.

Might have to give leedroid an ould gander

LeeDroid is excellent, have been using it since I got my phone. I'm currently on 2.2.2 and kernel 2.25. Going to hang on a bit, until more work is done by Lee on Gingerbread.

I'm still using gingervillain, it's been updated to 2.3.3 as of the other day. I can't fault it, battery life has been the best since i've had the phone. there's also an onboard app for downloading and flashing updates\kernels\mods that i've found myself using (feels like cheating when compared to doing these things the old way)

    Excellent!

another vote for Cyanogenmod 7, pretty flawless in my experience...

Can anyone who has used leedroid and Cyanogenmod 7 give me the pros of using Cyanogenmod 7 ?

I know about the htc sense stuff I'm more interested in smoothness, speed battery life and reliability.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 828 ✭✭✭dingdong1234567

The words 'kid' and 'candy shop' spring to mind here! Fanstatic stuff i have to say.

Flashed CyanogenMod-7 for Desire GSM V7.0.0-RC2 this morning with Launcher Pro installed and it is very smooth. It plenty of space left on my internal memory, but have not installed all my apps yet. Have noticed not all ROMS have market access.

Which ROMS are most market friendly in the sense that its out of the box as opposed to an secondary add-on fix to gain access to the Market etc.

Will give it a few days to determine battery lenght before trying other roms.

    Great input lads, kudos!

Profile settings & usual nightly bugfixes.

Do you know if it deletes all your apps if you install it over RC1?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,365 ✭✭✭ongarite

    It shouldn't.
There is an updated GAPPS would should flash with it though.

I put that on last night. Looks cool but anytime I tried to enter my WiFi settings it rebooted so I just put leedroid back on :(

Besides wifi issues, was there anything better on Cynagenmod compared to LeeDroid?

They have an official website explaining its features.
    http://www.cyanogenmod.com/

It has a better music player; DSP equaliser with presets; phone profiles; private browsing; quiet hours; integrated ADW Launcher; customisable lock-screen; gesture support for lockscreen & music; programmable light and proxity sensor and function of any key on the phone aswell as the usual kernel power saving mods.

    What are the wifi issues?

Current kernel doesn't support wifi channel > 11.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,755 ✭✭✭niallb

That's a regional restriction - you can remove it by going to Wi-Fi Settings,
choose "menu" -> Advanced, and change your Regulatory domain.
The 11 channel restriction is US, and may be default for a new install.
The 14 channel is meant for France.
I tend to avoid channels over 11 for interoperability with visiting americans!
    Confirmed on Cyanogenmod 7.0-RC2

I rebooted me phone and it works perfectly now. Someone on cyanogenmod forums said to do it. Some reason the wifi goes mental on first boot. Delighted because I really like this firmware

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,893 ✭✭✭The_B_Man

lol I updated my RC1 to RC2 using ROM Manager just before bed last night.
I think the feckin thing installed the CDMA version or something, but whatever happened I managed to USB brick the thing! Was up til about half 3 tryin to fix it. In the end, its a piss easy fix that only took me 2 minutes once i found out how to do it.

Then I downloaded the ROM from the website and flashed it manually. Works perfect now, except all my data was wiped after the first bogey flash. The only difference i notice with the update is the profiles. And I've 2 "Car Home" apps for some reason...

Just out of interest, what battery life are people getting out of the various ROMS that are out there.

Perhaps a brief detail of what usage also, ie light, medium & heavy etc on the various ROMS?

mine seems to be a bit better in fairness. i suppose I'd be a heavy user. Play games for a few hours a day and be on the internet for using wifi for another few hours. I live a boring life.

Has anyone found a good Sense Gingerbread ROM yet?
With working camera, FM radio etc?
I'm on leedroid 2.3d with Launcher Pro currently.

Not mad on senseless ROM cos I couldn't copy and paste last time.

    PS: original desire phone...

I'm interested in the same - anyone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,365 ✭✭✭ongarite

Your going to have to wait till HTC release the official Desire family Gingerbread update someone this summer before you will get a LeeDroid based version.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 828 ✭✭✭dingdong1234567

Currently have leedroid 2.3d with launcher pro installed also. Have the ability to partition the SD card to increase internal memory storage. Very smooth and happy with the extra space for apps.

Battery ain't much better than stock sense though.

    LeeDroid isnt Gingerbread, is it?
I was looking at it today and I think it was the older Android version.
Though I like how it has the Sense. I probably shoulda stuck with that longer before rooting/flashing to CyanogenMod7.

Has anyone used that Miui ROM? I'm getting bored with CM7 coz its just plain stock Android. Looking at the "screenshots" thread, I wanna customise mine a lot more!

Also have Leedroid and found it a big improvement over Modaco for battery life. I use it with SetCPU with the smartass CPU governor as the default. Battery still at 50% this evening after a lot of phone calls and emails over 3G.

Interesting, don't have setcpu or smartass installed. Perhaps could be worth a try if it means extra battery performance.

If anyone has Desire HD and wants to try out something a bit different from CM/Sense, I'm compiling MIUI every Friday for this phone, see here for my thread at XDA.

They just updated to Gingerbread last week so a bit experimental at the moment ;) but I've kept the Froyo version available too. You can get it for plenty of other phones too, just check out MIUI-dev forums.

Very straight forward. The smartass CPU governor is built into the LeeDroid ROM kernel. Just download SetCPU. On the scaling screen set the Max CPU to 1152000Mhz (yes it can overclock) and the Min to something like 422400. On the profile screen, setup a profile for screen off with Max 24500 Min 24500, scaling smartass, priority 100. See how you go.

Is there a Desire (non HD) one too? Also, while you're here, you're obviously someone who knows about this sorta stuff, so whats the difference between Desire GSM and Desire CDMA?

Nearly all Desire custom ROMS like Cyanogenmod 7, Oxygen, MIUI, etc.. all have the smartass governor built into the kernel so SETCPU isn't needed.

CDMA is an phone standard kinda like GSM/3G mainly used in the US.
GSM Desire is sold all over the world and can be used roaming worldwide while the CDMA version works in US only.

That's technically correct. However SetCPU does allow more control.
