A trio of Twitter questions?

Can one prevent or block people like advertisers or others who are just intent on spamming, without having to set it so every follower and/or mention visible needs to be confirmed?

Is it possible to receive an alert whenever mentioned by email, somehow to Firefox, or even a program running in my system tray on my Ubuntu 10.10 desktop?

What exactly practical, if anything, has linking my Facebook to Twitter done? I have set it so that my tweets do not post as Facebook statuses, but I had thought a link to my Twitter would be visible on my profile somewhere, maybe on the info tab.

Only joined up recently, so eager to reach the next follower number milestone

Difficult to get rid of the spammers. they'll only appear in your 'mentions'. You'll have to deal with them manually. I'm sure somebody has sophisticated system but as Twitter is a public timeline there is nothing stopping anybody contacting you (unless you protect your tweets)

What I use is Tweetdeck so you have a column that shows all the @mentions. If you do end up with a big following and a busy Twitter account you are probably not going to want to have e-mails with every mention.

There is some advantage to linking Facebook and Twitter. I set one page so it tweets if new photos, videos, notes or events are created. Drives some extra traffic. I would not have your Facebook status set to tweet as it gives you more flexibility to have different status updates in both Facebook and Twitter. People also cop on quickly that you're automating the system.

Do you mean following you, or responding to you?

There's no stopping the latter - if your profile is public they will reply automatically to you without having to follow you. Usually they pick up a phrase/word (eg. 'Wordpress', 'SEO', etc) and reply to it immediately.

As for following you - nope. If your profile is public, it's public for a reason and thus allows anybody to follow you - real or fake. If it's closed, then you have the choice to filter who and who cannot follow you.

Before replying and while posting, does anybody know if it is only public figures who can confirm their identify?

Considered protecting them briefly before, but I believe the cost very much outweighs the benefit.

Thanks, downloading Tweetdeck now and I was pleased to find linux support. I do not expect to get a big following, but I often address journalists and others in the media and it would be nice to automatically be alerted to any replies :)

I would prefer to keep them as separate entities myself. What I was really wondering is if my Twitter name, or a link to follow me should be appearing on my profile or even the info tab of my profile?

Both in fact, although in the case of advertisers/spammers they would not actually be responding, rather mentioning :)

Thanks for the info. There is at least an option to report spamming, and the twit who spammed me is no longer in my mentions so I am assuming reports of them were acted upon.

The verification seems to be only something Twitter can do and they don't do it often. I see there are some companies claiming to offer it but hard to say if they can.

Facebook - you can install a little app that will display your tweets on a 'tab' in Facebook. You can get it from Involver - www.involver.com
