Question about psychological treatment and schizophrenia

Hey, I hope this doesn't violate the rules on asking for medical advice, I'm not interested in personal exact information on what I should be doing but exploring potential options on the subject. I have discussed this with both my psychiatrist and my GP, my GP said to go with my psychiatrist's advice and my psychiatrist's advice was that I could see a psychologist if I wanted to but he didn't feel strongly either way about it. So I'm at a bit of a loss over what course of action to pursue and would be interested in finding out about whether psychological treatment is highly rated for the treatment of chronic schizophrenia.

So my question is, how effective have studies shown psychological intervention to be in the case of chronic schizophrenia. By chronic I mean, non-acute phase, where negative and cognitive symptoms are dominant and positive symptoms are less pronounced. Residual schizophrenia may be the diagnostic category for this but I'm no psychiatrist so am not 100% sure.

I know this is treading extremely close to the line on medical advice but what I'm hoping is that asking for general information on the question is ok.
