I listened to most of the original. Can't say I'd put up with another 52 minutes of that guy. It's a bit ranty, but he makes some valid points.

    Don't have a clue.

However, what does he mean about Fedora pushing the boundaries with respect to technology?
What does it do in terms of tech that say Ubuntu doesn't?

Also I agree, ATI are bad people.

    Define suck(s).

I've been using linux on my laptop/desktop for erm.... nearly 10 years. Wow I feel old.

10 years ago it, no I wouldn't say it sucked then. If it did, I wouldn't have bothered using it. I am not a masochist. It was a lot more difficult to run than Windows and it did require a bit more work, but that is because Windows works mostly out of the box.

I dont have time to listen to the video now, but I will have a look later(though the title is very familiar, I may have seen it before)

Trolling polemicist. He doesn't say anything new imho, Linux will never be a single unified alternative to MS Win or Mac OS. HW support has always been an issue. Applications choice is improving and gaming options do not compare to MS Win.
All this aside. We got vlc, firefox, open office and that covers most users requirements. What we don't have is DRM, crippling EULAS or activex/vbs which to borrow a phase from yer man is awesome

    I think that's pretty inaccurate.
Did you watch the whole thing?

I'm not being contrary here, but he acknowledged all your points.
He also made really good arguements and outlined what he meant.
The title is a bit OTT but since when are American Geeks not OTT?

He is hardly trolling or being polemic.

I watched 50ish minutes of it. Poor vendor HW support has been an issue, albeit one that is improving. Trying to get a soundcard working under linux 10yrs ago was much more troublesome that it is now. WiFi support has improved incredibly recently. Does linux have 'killer apps' yet? Again there has been considerable improvement recently.

Like the guy says in his talk many of the issues come down to money, developers have to eat too he says. What is new is the amount of kernel development that is now done by commercial entities, (e.g. google, intel, redhat).

Microsoft and Apple develop their product on a commercial basis, I.E. they sell it along with a license that stipulates what the end user can and cannot do with their product. The GNU license and OSS ideology has a different origin. Perhaps linux is now at a stage where it will require more financial investment to move it forward.

We have Mark Shuttleworth to thank for Ubuntu which has been the most viable alternative to Microsoft and Apple desktop operating systems to date. Such philanthropy is more exceptional than normal. From a commercial viewpoint the problem with linux is how do they monetise it? So far we have seen commercial licensing and selling support, this area will only grow further.

The OEM vendors should ceate their own Linuxes SONUX for Sony and so on. Sony should anyway they need to confront Apple on the quality stakes.
