I have a ten year old hand held bearcat scanner. I want to make up a new battery pack . I will have to take out old one and use the connector from it on new rechargable set. Will my preset stations hold if I keep it plugged in on its mains recharger while I make and solder the new pack. Also has anybody got any good settings for services in south east Dublin area

Hmm...are these things even legal here? Posters thread carefully, if I can find a reason to close this thread I will.

I bought this bearcat in Ireland and have used it mostly for airshows and aircraft spotting and I am sure it is OK. The info I need is if anyone has taken out the battery pack sucessfully without losing presets

    Forum Here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=922

Tell them what Model it is. Some will lose settings and some not, I think.

    They are legal now

The law got changed a few years back and most of the more (ahem) "interesting" stuff has gone digital anyway.

But the OP might be better asking this question on the hobby radio board

He did, now, and got answers.

They were never illegal as such (as long as you never told anyone what you heard), as they don't transmit. UK oddly is a bit more tricky in this regard.

    Yes the were

The 1926 act and 1972 regulations meant one needed a licence for them (licences were never issued to the general public) The airport bye laws also contained (not sure if they still do) probhitions on their use within the precints of the main airports.

However Im not aware of any instances of this being enforced unless the individuals were also suspected of involvment in other criminal activities.

Something you can get a licence for isn't illegal as such. I think you are nit picking, and even today, if you involved in illegal activity, having a Scanner would be a negative. No one not involved in illegal activity ever had a problem about a scanner.

    Transmitting on 470KHz, can't get a licence.

Yes, well they are touchy about anything out of the ordinary near airports. That's covered by the Suspicious Activity thing...

You're meant to turn off Mobile radio at airports too, though Comreg hasn't specified an actual distance. How near or far is vicinity of Airport, Harbour or Estuary?

Im sorry but I think it is you who is nit picking.

In theory I could apply to the government for a licence to enrich uraniam in my garden shed.

In practice I suspect the response to such an application would be a visit from men with either guns or white coats asking all manner of awkward questions.
