Another Recommend Me A Car Thread

Hi folks, I'm wondering if any of you would be so kind as to recommend me a car. I only have a very limited budget of €1.5k - €2k.

I have a fairly long commute of approx. 50 miles each way so this car is going to get a lot of miles put on it. As a result I would like something that ideally is pretty economical.

I don't care what it looks like, don't care if the body has dings/scratches on it. I do a fair bit of kayaking so it would need to be happy hoofing a couple of kayaks on the roof and have a decent amount of room for gear.

I had a '00 Citroen Xsara before and put 170k miles on it but it has given up the ghost now. To be honest I found it pretty flimsy with bits falling off and a lot of repairs over the years, as a result I wouldn't be keen on another Citroen.

    Thanks for reading.

Decent corolla diesel or even an Avensis. Keep the engines simple and you'll get years of easy motoring.

If going petrol I would go with an Avensis 4Afe engine 1.6 on a trip of 50 miles should average 40-43mpg. Otherwise I dunno!

Thanks for the advice so far lads. Would an Octavia be an option?

If you like boot jokes, yes.

Rather than starting a whole new thread, I also am looking for a recommendation/some advice.
Am currently driving an 03 Mondeo, missus has a 98 Polo. The Polo has seen better days so we're considering replacing it. The two options we see are a straight swap for the missus from the Polo into a decent, safe family car (just had our second child two weeks ago) or her taking the Mondeo and me getting an economical diesel (I commute daily from Portlaoise to Naas).
Any suggestions on which option to take, and then any recommendations on what cars should be considered?

There's an avensis 2.0TD with about 80k on donedeal for around 1650 I think, its a red base model estate. Worth looking at I think.

So Corolla or Avensis then. Anything else I should consider?

Not really. They should give you the best running costs/reliability comprimise. If you want some comfort and in a diesel you could take a punt on a Xantia.
