I need a novel or play where the main character/characters are members of a subcultural group. I read a lot but nothing springs to mind when I thought about which novel or play to use. Any suggestions?

Pick a subculture that interests you, and go from there. I'm not going to list individual works, but here are some subcultures: goths, emo kids, geeks, drug users (lots of subgroups), punks, Renaissance Fair attendees, full-time actors, poor bohemian artists, IT consultants, mercenaries, homeless people.
