Legitimate mileage correction, is there such a thing?

recently, i changed the gauges on a car belonging to a friend of mine as a favour. i done a bit of background research first and discovered with the model in question, both the cars ECU and the dials themselves keep a record of the mileage, and if the gauges/ ECU should ever get swapped the gauges will then pick the highest mileage to display, and that mileage is then embedded onto the ECU.

Anyway, his car is a 01 with 175,000 miles on the clock and the gauges that got re-fitted were from a 06 car. i told him the possible implications before i started, and he said he was happy to take a chance, seeing as the gauges were much newer and much more likely to be lower mileage than his own, so when they got connected, his original 175k should appear.

so anyway, plugged them in, turned the car on... 240,000 appears! he's knew it was a chance, and just if possible would like to get his old mileage back so there won't be a gaping hole in his service history etc.

does anybody do mileage correction anymore or is it 100% illegal?
could a citroen main dealer do it?
the car failed its NCT for the instrument cluster not working, so when it goes back for the retest will there be an issue with the mileage having changed from 175 to 240k in a matter of 2 weeks?

    Thanks in advance.

is that what you did to the evo ?

It is 100% legal. You can change the mileage to whatever you want. But if you sell the car then your legally obliged to inform the new owner.

Edit: A quick google finds this website http://mileagecorrection.ie/Mileagecorrection.ie/Mileage.html

Well if you are telling the truth it doesnt matter. There is nothing illegal about changing the mileage. Its only illegal if you use it to mislead someone about the car. You could change it to 1,000miles on the clock but as long as you told the guy buying it the real mileage then it wouldnt be illegal.

edit: Deano just beat me to it.

Any garage with a half decent diagnostic reader can adjust the mileage.

sweet as a nut lads, thanks for the replys :)

last but not least, if it doesn't get altered before its N.C.T. retest, will the tester have a problem with the car sprouting tens of thousands of miles in a fortnight?

Does it really matter with a 10 year old citroen? I'd just put it though the NCT and observe what happens. Service history is probably academic too.

No chance it is 240k kms by any chance, given the cluster came from an 06 car?

Perhaps the car was clcked before and 240,000 is actually the correct mileage?

I think I would get it corrected to 175000 unless it is planned to keep it for to end of life.

well when the ECU is confronted with two separate mileages, it always choses the higher, so there's no way to bring a mileage down via swapping gauges anyway.

i think he intends to sell if after its tested so thats why he wants it straight.

i also think its remarkable a car covered 240k in a maximum 5 years, it must have never been off the road :D (cluster is in miles too)

If you'd not said miles, I was going to suggest you'd got the panel from my recently returned 06 Citroen that had 249500km on it when I gave it back!

I'd actually hope not cause it was mechanically fine; bodywork was beyond a bit rough though.
