The Pressure Shots

Would you say that you are good at pulling out a shot when you really need too?

What was your toughest shot ever or pressure shot?

I would say I have done well in past with pressure shots.

The one that sticks in my mind the most though was in annual matchplay tournement and was in the semi final. I was only 16 and was my first year in the competition. I was playing a guy who as we say was a clever player and known for his excellent matchplay record..

Anyway we were on the 17th a par 3 at all square. He was first up and hit a beauty to 5 feet. Anyway up I stepped with my five iron and hit it within his ball to about 3-4 feetaway. He missed his putt and I got mine and went on to win 2up. I lost the final 3&2 but never forget that run.

Another is when I was plaing Fred Daly I was 4 down with four to play and brought it back to one standing on par 4 18th green I had birdie putt left of 15 feet. Anyway he had pitch over little hump about 20 yards and was his fourth shot after he fired it into the trees and had hack out and hit 3rd shot fat. So its looking like two putts for me to half only for him to hole the pitch.

Now I have to hole my putt to halve match and for us too go through in front of about 100 people watching. I sank the putt. Was great feeling I have too say.

I like too hear your stories.

Today. Rescue club from 200yds to the 18th at Hermitage after making a b*llox of the 17th. Pin high on the left. Two putts.

    Piece. Of. Piss :D

You have to be in contention for it to count as a pressure shot!

One obvious choice for me, the one and only Junior Scratch Cup to my name was sealed with a 4 wood to the par 5 17th hole from around 225 yards. I knew I was going well and had pretty much decided to play the hole as a three-shotter, but I killed my drive and couldn't in good conscience lay up! Career shot to the back of the green and 2 putts later pretty much took care of business

Qtr finals singles match play last year against a mate where there is always a bit of competition between us.
He was one up hitting off the 17th par 4, he hits a cracker down the middle and i slice mine way right and he says to me after hitting that i choked and that pissed me right off.

Had trees to go over and bunkers guarding the green, took me a while going back and forth from one fairway to the other as i could'nt see nothing and picked a mast way off in the hills as my guide.
Hit a six iron onto the back of the green and a chip and run with a putt got me par.
He hit his approach short, scuffed his 3rd and missed a putt for par.

Level going up 18th, smacked my drive down the middle and he went OB on his drive, i got my par and won the match.

It ain't over till it's over and yes i did say to him that he choked on the 18th :D
Demoralised the man , he played dirt for weeks after it !

That was bad form. Mates or not it's 1/4 final match-play and that was uncalled for. Glad to see you beat him in the end :D - sounds like he got what he deserved.

The Fred Daly? Open Champ in 1947? Tell us more! :pac:

I find just standing up on the first tee on a Sunday morning a pressure shot!!:eek:

I'm not playing in competitions very long - this is my second year as a member of any club and I only played my first competition last autumn.

Although the Curragh's got a pretty forgiving first hole, I still view getting away well as probably the most important shot of the day. (Nailed it last weekend too! :D)

Mind you, I got to the 18th green last Sunday week with a brilliant drive and a shot-of-the-month 5-iron pin high to about 9 feet. Still two-putted though... Still, delighted to finish with a par.

Last hole of Barton cup match about 10 years ago, teams all square, final match out all square going down the last, opposition hits long second (4iron ) to par 4 leaving a 20 ft putt for birdie, we were 10 yards short of the green in 2. Lined up to chip the ball, decelerated beautifully resulting in a rocketing blade across the green, was going through by about 15 yards until it rattled the pin with some ferocity and dropped for a fully deserved birdie! Needless to say the opposition were not impressed.

Haha, had a laugh to myself reading that one. I'd say the opposition were fairly annoyed alright, probably still talking about that flukey fcuker who beat us in the Barton 10 years ago! :D

    He did indeed !
Gotta use comments like that to your advantage and concentrate that bit more after it. We all have a competitive edge no matter what and at same time i try and encourage players that i play with to play well. (only if i'm dirt on the day :D ).

Actually one the best shots I have seen was in a munster country clubs match good ten years ago.

I was caddie for my mate he was playing a guy who was basically a knob he was trying to put off my mate all the time with smart comments just one those fellas ya want smack;).

It was all square down last which was par five mate hit decent drive nicely on fairway. Anyway the opponent hit his second to leave him 60 yards as there was water along left and front really was 3 shot to green. Anyway as he was walking up he said to his caddie that he will birdie the hole and will teach this "kid"(my mate) how close out a match. My mate had short fuse at best of times and asked me for 3 wood, my reply was what the hell are you doing to which he replyed I am going show him who the kid here.

He had 190 carry to reach the green hit the best shot he will ever hit to leave it about 7 feet and even tough the opponent did do as he would and got his Birdie 4 my mate holed the putt for eagle.

He was playing off 11 I think at the time

    Was the deciding game too.

    Sweet
