I met a man a few years ago who had a university student living in his house. There was an arrangement that the student did some housework and in return paid no rent or other charges for living in the house. The house was about 5 minutes walk from UCD.
I have been asked by a relative about arranging something similar for a student. Do the colleges have lists of people available who will provide this kind of arrangement? Do they vet the houseowners?
