Can a Virus Be Transferred Via Digital Camera

Problem with a camera where it was used for a photography course and it seems to have picked up a virus off one of the computers being used on the course and transferred it onto a networked computer here whose virus detection system picked up the presence of the virus when the camera was plugged in.

What are the options? It's my bosses camera, he's kind of a luddite and I'm probably not a pile better. I had never heard of this happening before.

How can we make the camera safe for interface? He seems unconcerned, I'd be more inclined to err on the side of responsible cautiousness!

Remove the virus from the machine. Double check it was a virus not a false positive.

Reformat the memory card in the camera.

Make sure auto play is turned off on all drives which take removable media. There was a recent update from MS turning it off on USB ports but I always have it turned of on CD/DVD drives.

It's no real hardship to navigate to the drive and choose play for media discs or to run setup on software discs and a lot safer than allowing a virus to install itself using the autorun facility.
