Time for my car to get its yearly car servicing.

I've rang a few garages each giving me a different quote. There's a garage that's offering a 15 point check for 139 euro and another offering a 35 point check for 180 euro. An extra few bob for the 35 point check. Should the 15 point check suffice or should I go for the 35 point check?

Gonna get shot down here but, as far as I can see there is a lot of checks going on there, the more checks, the bigger the list of stuff that will need replacing the higher the cost of going to that garage to correct all the problems that will arise. Obviously you don't need to go to that garage to correct the mistakes, but sometimes ignorance is bliss. :pac:

Example recently was told brake discs and brake pads need replacing even though my own mechanic just put in a new set of discs and pads. wishbones too although just passed the N.C.T today

I think you're approaching this backwards. Take out the service book and find out what the car needs at this service, then get quotes for that.

Thats one of the most rediculous statements ive read on here.

If theres a problem with my car id like to know about it rather then burying my head in the sand.

What type of car do you have, sometimes you are better off taken the car to an independent garage that specialises in the make of the car.
That way at least they have a knowlege on what are the weaknesses of the particular model.

My point was that sometimes unless you trust totally the person servicing your car problems may arise which aren't actually truly there. ie your brake pads are worn but may not be actually worn, your brake disks etc, so my point is a trusted mechanic stands you in good stead and is worth more to you down the line than a garage you don't know. This is my experience.

I recognise that blurb I think.;)

The price is a generalised price for a full service and inspection. The 15 point inspection on that particular list referances major points like brakes, suspension, lights, steering etc etc

With the above service/inspection there car will be fully checked to manufacturer specifications(may not be due plugs at current mileage etc etc) and any items found as required further to the standard service will be advised and offered for inspection to the customer for their approval before further work goes ahead.

A 35 point service which is listing individual things like 'top up brake fluid, top up coolant, top up washer' is just making it sound like you are getting more for your money. All serviceable and wearable items should be checked in any service.

Thats the new stupidest thing I've read on boards motors.

So if you had a car serviced and the garage found issues, you'd rather they didn't tell you about them. And if something failed or you had an accident due to one of the issues, you'd be fine about it and say 'ah sure, I didn't know about the problem so its ok'

You'd likely be the first one back to the garage, solicitor in tow, asking why the problem wasn't noticed or reported to you.
