I used this site last summer to download a California contour map onto my Garmin eTrex vista hcx using mapsource. It served me very well on a self guided hiking holiday in the Sierra Nevada's last summer.

They seem to have all the US states covered, and have a full list of other international countries which you could search if your planning a hike abroad, and want to use your own GPS. Ireland has a page also, with links to the SMC maps which irish handheld gps users might be familiar with.

Thought id share, will post also in outdoor pursuits, as I think its equally relevant there.
