Deferring a year?

Just wondering, I'm an SF TSM student and am considering taking a year out before entering 3rd year, i.e. deferring my 3rd year for 12 months. Is this allowed? and if so, what would be the procedure for doing so?

    Thanks
    Daryl

AFAIK, you can take a year out at any stage. Couple of TSM language folks I was friends with as an undergrad did it to go off and live in the relevant countries as they couldn't do 3rd year abroad what with the other subject to study and all that.

From what I remember, you can do it as long as you're in 'good academic standing' or something like that. Vaguely remember one of the lads worrying that failing one subject would possibly screw up his plans.

I think you can just talk to your tutor and they should be able to help you sort it all out. I'm pretty new here but if I'm wrong, I'm sure there are other boards people who should be able to advise you a bit more accurately.

The term for it is "going off books". And yes, you should talk to your tutor about it.

Does "going off books" not involve taking exams?

Normally, yes. You *can* apply to repeat a year off books (and take the exams at the end of it), but it's pretty unusual.

A year out is usually easy enough, an "intermission of studies" they call it sometimes, I think that's like off books but without the exams. It's what the TN editor usually does I think.

Oh and there's a fee for going off books, it's payment for the exams but I don't know what the story is if you're not actually sitting any exams...

Many going off-books take exams. Others going off-books do not sit exams. It depends on the reasons for going off-books.

For some, like Presidents of the Phil, and (presumably) sabbatical officers, the relevant year is classified as "intermission of studies".

It sounds like you are going to take your SF exams this year, yes? Then take next year out and come back in Sep 2013

I've deferred third year till next year having done the first couple of months this year. Wasn't a problem. Just talk to your tutor and he/she will help sort it out.

Sounds good, Did you have to go through an interview and get a grilling as to why you wanted to take the intermission or anything?

Nope. Emailed my tutor and he got back to me to set up a quick meeting with himself just to discuss my options. He then immediately emailed the Senior Lecturer (I think) and Student Records. A few weeks later I received an e-mail confirming my deferrel.

Thanks for the advice, I'm just slightly worried as to where my reasoning that I want a year out to work is a valid enough reason for them to let me take the year? O r should i say something else?

I'd assume you'd fall under 'Financial' reasons there, if you have a look at the four reasons you can present (Financial, Academic, Personal, Medical)

My tutor didn't really seem to mind what the reasoning was and moreso that I was completely sure! I'd imagine financial reasoning would be more than sufficient! Just send your tutor a quick email explaining yourself anyway!
