    Hey all,

I'm heading over to Sardinia in September with my wife and our 1 year old girl. Flights booked but we are looking for somewhere to stay. We are looking for a nice quiet spot by the sea where we can set up camp as we will be exploring the island a bit by car.

Our budget is probably around the 800 to 1200 for the 7 nights so looking to be comfortable where we stay.

Any help, advice or tips would be most welocme and appreciated.

    Cheers

We spent 11 days in Sardinia in 2008, we flew into Alghero and stayed just outside the town in some self-catering apartments with a pool (great for kids).

    This is the place: http://www.residenceucalipti.it/

If your budget will stretch, there are some good hotels in towards the town - my sister has stayed at http://www.hotelvillalastronas.it/, but self-catering suited us (preferred to spend our budget on some nice meals out).

Sardinia is a very nice spot for a holiday, food is great but you will need the car to get the most out of it. Some stunning beaches less than an hour's drive from Alghero. A trip inland to some of the mountain villages is worthwhile too. Try and get to see Neptune's Grotto if you don't mind a few hundred steps (sea caves, http://www.algherosardinia.net/neptunes-grotto.html).

I would add to everything Mayo for Sam said. Sardinia is a beautiful Island and in and around Alghero there are a few places to stay. I was there for 3 weeks in 2007 and stayed here http://www.lamariposa.it/

We camped and it was fantastic because you could just fall out of your tent in the morning and take a dip in the sea. Nice place, nice beach, nice people. The food is incredible but that is par for the course for the south of Italy. If you want to see more of the island you will absolutely need a car and if you can get over to the Costa Smeraldo you can see how the well heeled in Italy take their vacations.

If I could give one piece of advice though I would say bring a phrasebook because not a soul speaks English there. Even car rental places, the whole shebang was conducted with lots of pointing and gestures. The ability to say a few small things like "How much a day" "Quanta costa al giorno" will make a huge difference to making the finer points of your stay run smoother.

Sardinians are nice folks though and they will appreciate the bit of effort. You will have a great time. I still look back on it as one of my best ever holidays

For a deal as well Sept is the ideal time to go as Italians do not take vacations in September, so everything will be cheaper and a bit quieter. There will be a few locals knocking around the beach but you will see mainly English Germans Australians there this time of year

In 2009 I stayed with my friends at Alghero hotels and they cost around 800 and I think now they will be higher. I was at the best location..

Consider moving away fromt he city and along the north coast to Santa Theresa de Gallura - a lovely town. We stayed a little bit outside in Baia Sanata Reparta in September a few years ago and the its a lovely quiet area but keep in mind that in September a lot of places are closing up for the season.

Close to here you have La Maddelena which you take a boat out to but it is really worth it - fantastic crystal blue waters and lovely town. Further along the coast you'll come to Puerto Cervo where you'll can see how the rich and famous live / holiday.

I haven't been to othr areas of Sardinia just sharing the knowledge I have of the area I was in.
