I have recently reduced my hours to 20hrs a week. One of my days will be Mondays. I know my annual leave is cut in half but I will feel hard done by if I have to use my annual leave to cover bank holidays
My question is if I have to take leave for all 9 of the bank holidays do I get credited with 9 days or 4 1/2 days bank holiday leave? Also can I be made to take all bank holidays as time off when there is the option of some individuals working? I'm in the public service.

    Thanks in advance.

Bank holidays are fully paid days off. You cannot be made take it out of your annual leave.

Although you may work a full day on Mondays, you are entitled to the bank holiday Monday off and to be paid for that day. However your pay for that day will be one-fifth of your annual weekly pay, i.e. 4 hours.

So although you may work 8 hours on Mondays, you get the whole day off but only get paid for 4 hours.

I get a bank holiday bonus, but am not entitled to a day off. Whats the story?

You're not necessarily entitled to have the day off on that particular day.

If you're working that day, your employer can pay you in lieu (so 2 days pay), or give you an additional day's annual leave.

To be pedantic, the entitlement is for public holidays, not bank holidays. For instance, if Christmas day falls on a weekend, then the public holiday is not automatically moved to the following Monday. The bank holiday is, but you're not entitled to take it off.

Edit: Unless your contract says otherwise

So as Good Friday is a public holiday, but not a bank holiday, am I entitled to a paid day off that day?

Other way around: Good Friday is not a public holiday, it's a bank holiday - so unless your contract says otherwise, there is absolutely no entitlement.

Edit - the link above sums it up:
Good Friday is not a public holiday. While some schools and businesses close on that day, you have no automatic entitlement to time off work on that day.
