Helmet law in Northern Ireland

I don't know if this has been brought out before, but this site campaigns against the introduction of mandatory helmet use in the North.

    http://wrongheaded.org.uk/

There is a petition for anyone to sign (never been convinced these can be any useful, but it only takes 2 seconds to sign), and for those living in the North, there is a sample letter you can send to your Assembly member.

I fear that if this law passes, it can create a precedent for Ireland.

Theres already a thread on this I think.

I'm dead against the proposals and have written to my mla based on the sustrans draft letter. I have also written to the SDLP telling them never to come on my property or send mr any material ever again.

Interesting though that the site below claims that there were no cycling fatalities in n.Ireland 2009 and 2010 and references a statement made by Mla Edwin Poots to that effect during the recent debate in stormont. I'm 99% sure this is wrong, there have been cyclists killed by cars in that period.

This lists zero fatalities for pedal cyclists in 2009 and 2010:

    There's more in this:

You may be thinking of this incident which took place in 2008

Amazingly the driver concerned had his conviction overturned in January

He is due to be re-tried, although on lesser charges

Ahh, thanks for those links. I am mistaken.

That accident (or more accurately, 'crime') happened during one of our club races.

2008 was a very bad year for cyclist fatalities in the North. 2009 & 2010 saw no fatalities as confirmed by Bunnyhopper's links however I do know that there have been some very serious non-fatal accidents in that period.
