    Hi all.

There is an s40 for sale in the local garage (and i've wanted one for a while).

Its a '07, 1.6 tdi, with leather interior etc etc, but the garage is asking for 9500 along with my 03 citreon c5. He says he's giving 3800 for the c5 so that would put the s40 at 13,300.

Would a 07 volvo s40 be worth that money? What would be an estimate resale price in 3-4 years?

I really like the s40, and its far far more fuel efficient than the c5, and it feels pretty nifty aswell. Not the fastest car in the world, but certainly faster than any 1.6 diesel i've driven before. Im not sure how much HP it pushes.

I'm all confused on what to do

When you have a trade-in then the sticker price of the new car and the trade-in price of your old car become irrelevant as the figures become fudged. The only price that matters is how much the dealer wants from you to trade up. In order to know if it is a good deal, you will need to find a similar S40 from another garage and see what kind of money they want from you to trade-up.

BTW I had a 06 S40 1.6d upto the end of last year, it has 110bhp, while not the quickest indeed in the 0-60 dash it will easily cruise at 70mph on motorways. Just be aware that these cars can be expensive enough to maintain if you stick with main dealers. The diesel particular filter (DPF) being a major drain on my wallet. If you do short trips or town driving then my advice avoid buying a diesel model.

The ABS/traction control unit is another common failure and costs around €900 to replace. If the car shows a warning light on the dashboard for "Anti-skid urgent service needed" then the ABS/traction control unit more than likely is goosed. Volvo were replacing these free of charge afaik even outside of warranty if the car had a fvsh. Suspension components are also weak on them, parts like control arms, anti-roll bars, etc regularly need replacing. Make sure all electrics work too as they can be iffy.

Other than the above they are a grand car, very well built, well equipped and solid on the road. Very comfortable for long drives too. 1.6d should give you around 1000km to a tank of diesel too.

Compare the price to other S40s on carzone/donedeal/adverts.ie

An older thread suggest the 1.6 is a bit weak but you'll know once you test drive it if it's enough for you.
I had the bigger engine and really liked the car, got about 36 mpg motorway.

Thanks. Very helpful. Im googling around here and it seems like a reasonable enough price, if not a little high.

I have been hearing lots of reports of problems with the s40, brakes failing, engine not speeding up etc and i am now a little scared :) But I've been reading a lot of great reports too.

I think I'm just going to jump the gun and buy it this weekend. Love the look of the car and it drives pretty well too. Hopefully i don't regret it!

    I've got a 2006 2.0d volvo s40.

To say I've had a bit of trouble with it would be a massive understatement!

Just today I broke down on the motorway, not fun! Car is currently in the garage and I'm expecting a bill for a new turbo.

Flywheel and clutch also went. Few weird electric problems. For about 2 weeks it wouldnt start and went to 2 different garages before going to a volvo dealer who eventually fixed it.

You can be unlucky with any car though. They are decent to drive although I didn't find the 1.6d very smooth. I'd get a 2.0d at least.
