Question for someone bright( like Slidey):D, I need to get a small tipper truck, somthing up to 3.5 ton GVW, (car licence), and I've sort of narrowed it down to an Isuzu NPR, any major no no's or are they a good wagon? I have feck all experience of jap truckettes but know vans pretty good. All comments welcome and received gratefully, thanks, Soln.

We got a dyna150 tipper made for a customer, the payload was tiny. Around 600kg.

    Yep, payload is tiny.

Sligo Co Co have a few double cab Canters and are about 100kg under their gross weight when empty.

An Isuzu NHR would be a good deal lighter than the NPR so may increase your legal payload.

I would favour the Isuzu's over the Canters anyway. They would need less regular maintenance IMO

I would have a look out for an Iveco Daily, Transits can be got with tippers as well.

Bought a Master today, small money, needing work. Might be a mistake but I'll see how it goes! Mates opinions seem to be 50/50 on it ie some say scrap, some say ok. Oh well.

I doubt it Colm, I've has almost every make of commercial going, and its a lottery. People rave about transits and I find them soft junk, people slate citroens and I have one with 280,000 up and its untouched. Same goes for Ivecos, I find them tough, others say junk. Regardless, I threw it(the master) up to the local spannerman and told him to go wild and replace everything that wanted replacing, d.o.e it and give it back when its all sorted. He looked at me like it was christmass!! Don't really care, I like the size of the body, its got a good taillift fitted and I will get my money worth out of it regardless of how often it breaks down or how much it costs to fix.
As long as there is no finance involved I find they all pay their way-I like running cheapies even if they have had engines, boxes etc, it still beats depreciation and the monthly drip. BTW, not a single spot of rust on the master, just knackered wheel bearings, links, etc-all easily replaced. The synchros are gone on the box(common fault) but they are easily and cheaply overhauled, and it needs tyres and pads. Doesn't phase me really.

well... it was invented, it was terrible then, was bought by people, then sold to other people, it was still terrible, and now it's probably got even worse.

though the big grin smily at the end does suggest he might be joking, but probably not.

I used to work managing leased cars, vans, 4x4s etc.
(in recent times not 20 years ago)

there were almost no renaults of any kind, commercial or otherwise that went out and avoided being incredibly awful for at least one extended period of time.

Pahh, gearbox was least of it, try every component you could touch, see or feel!! Luckily, a fine fellow decided he loved it and wanted to take tender loving care of it. I lost €250, but it could have been worse. A total, utter, unadulterated, complete, steaming, freshly dropped, fly infested, wormy ball of sh17e that should never have been allowed to dribble down its mothers leg, reform at her feet and take to the highway.

Renault Master bates them all for crappiness.

    :D

Nicely put. One only has to look at the front suspension set up to realise that the designer was some sort of dribbling fool with a penchant for torturing mechanics...

It's a shame you lost money, but hopefully you've now learned from it, and will get something that's not as horrible sh*te as a renault master to replace it

Dual wishbone front suspension with an inboard coilspring, they're a straightforward yoke to work on, handier than the likes of the Iveco's with their torsion bar's or the Sprinters with their transverse leaf springs. The only real problem the front suspension gives is ball joints(which are cheap and easy to replace) and most modern van's give ball joint troubles.
