    Hello,

I'm not in to all this security stuff, so apologies. My free trial period with Acer ran out two weeks ago, and I can't afford to pay for it.

Is there any free online program that will protect my computer from viruses and stuff?

+1 for Microsoft Security Essentials. Delete whatever your free trial was, you can't use two antivirus at the same time.

Don't use Internet Explorer if you still are, all it's good for is downloading a different browser.

Use Firefox with these 3 add-ons (click on Tools when you have Firefox running to install add-ons),

    (1) Adblock Plus(subscribe to easylist) half the bad stuff you catch on the Internet comes from ads. Don't use it on your favourite sites, your cutting there funding.

    (2) No Script

    (3) Web Of Trust (WOT) blocks sites with bad ratings from loading.

For reading PDF documents use Foxit Reader instead of Adobes Reader(This is probably on your computer already, delete it, it's full of holes) do a custom install so you can untick all the stuff you don't want.

Install Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, and Comodo Firewall (don't install the antivirus that comes with it.) if comodo gives you trouble use PC Tools Firewall instead.

Don't use an Administrator account and update everything.

CCleaner is handy for keeping you computer tidy.

VLC media player for your songs and films. Super program.

This looks like alot but once installed thats it really.

OR install a different operating system and don't bother with anything, Ubuntu. Boards have a Forum for these here.

    All this stuff is free.

Thanks! I downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials there and everything is okay.

Is Google Chrome okay, as that is what I have always used?

Also, I can't find the option to uninstall my McAfee trial anywhere.

Has an option to uninstall software too, for that Mcafee Antivirus

Yea Chrome is ok, don't know if you can install all the add-ons, adblock plus is available for it so install it anyway.

To uninstall McAfee you need to go to "Add and Remove Programs" I'm not on windows 7 at the minute which I'm assuming your using but click start and type the above into the search box and it should pop up.

I've never used CCleaner to delete a program but the option is there, probably fine.

Microsoft Security Essentials would get my vote above all others, also try out spybot its good at removing spyware but when downloading make sure to uncheck the "tea timer" button as this will conflict with your other AV.

Also make sure to install the extensions that the user above posted, Ad block and wot are my two favourite extensions.

Also make sure your "Java" and "flash" are up to date, although flash is incorporated into chrome by default, To update chrome ...

    click the "wrench" icon
click "about google chrome" if you need to update it will tell you there.

    To update java ...

    click "start"
    click "control panel"
    click "java"
on java UI click second tab "update" and check it from there.

I usually uninstall java each time and download a new version if available, if you want to do this just uninstall java in "add-remove" programmes and go to their site and download a new version

As is WOT, adblock plus can be found here, Chrome has its own answer to NoScript, NotScript, its only a baby version but its something.
