Any scores-on-the-doors yet for the Colours?

Congratulations to UCD. It was a seriously close match. Standards were extremely high across the board and it was not an easy win for them. We'll see them, and beat them, next year.

    That's a pity.:(
Well done to UCDRC all the same.
Next year hopefully some silverware will be finding it's way into DURC's possession.;)

Yes indeed. As I say, the scores were very high. Top score was Aisling with 554 and top novice was Siobhan with 543. Novices shot into the 530s too. The standard has come such a long way. Realistically, to have a reasonable certainty of winning, novices would have to average 530 and seniors 545. This is absolutely brilliant to see. While the figures for novice score expectations may plateau (Realistically, you can only get someone so far in four months) the seniors will naturally continue to rise (and it could be argued that they should be scoring much better than fifteen points ahead of the novices on average to begin with). The competition is very strong, and that's good for all of us, and is why the intervarsities/colours is such an important competition.

Congrats to UCD. Nice top scores there. What was the diference between overall scores?

There were five points in it in the seniors match. The juniors was close too until there was a time issue in the last detail for one of our guys. Hell of a show though.

5 isn't too bad at all! How much time?

Are things looking promising to get most of the juniors back out for the nationals?

He had eight shots left to go at the end. There were a series of things that went wrong on that detail, everyone found themselves confused as to how much time they had left and it just didn't work out. These things happen though.

I think we'll get them all out now. We've a lot of them shooting smallbore as well, and with the outdoor season just around the corner, some of them will be getting into that and there's already plenty talk about the assorted national championships, so certainly lots of encouraging noises being made.

    Ah that is a shame.
Still, really nice to see a good close match happening.

Good to hear that the smallbore is picking up new faces too.

It is nice alright. The close proximity of the scores (and we knew it'd be close from the match results of the whole year so far) really drove the squad on to shoot what were frankly staggeringly good scores for only a few months of training. Brilliant to see.

The time issue really was a pity, but damn it's hard to argue with those scores for people who've been shooting less than a year. Especially when you look at the scores from ten to twelve years ago for the college clubs - check the DURC scores from 2000:

The highest scores for the college clubs for people who weren't already alumni who'd been on the national squad for a while aren't great - Ian Marnane was the best air rifle shot we had in the club that year, and that score was about fair to middling for him. Nicola and Ray were alumni or staff and had been training on the national squad for years at that point, and Denise (and Ciara if she'd been there) were almost in the same boat. So you were really looking at 520 being the best we had in the college clubs and the mean was closed to 450-460. Today... we're almost a hundred points higher.
That's unbelievable progress, it really is, and the college clubs should be exceptionally proud of that.

I'll add my congratulations to everyone that took part. The scores put in by the novices were nothing short of fantastic on both sides and the depth of the squads was great, with 10 of the novices shooting over 500.

It was a close competition all the way through, with a few hickups along the way for both teams. In the end though UCD had nudged enough ahead that DURC's shooter timing out made no material difference to the result (he'd have needed a 574 just to tie it)

Here's the object of affection (well one of the three) and it seems to have picked up a souvenir over the weekend!
