Looking at getting a bangernomics-style diesel estate as my next car. I need something to take a load of camping equipment & something that'll go easy on the fuel. Been looking around donedeal as you do. Ive 3 cars here i'd like to get your opinion on.

    1998 TD avensis; http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1887799

406 hdi estate, not this actual car, something a hell of a lot cheaper - http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1925671

Citreon C5 estate, again not this exact car but something like it; http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1841136

I'd have a very low budget, around 2500 euro max. Well which of these 3 would you go for or can you suggest an alternative?

    Thanks.

first preference the avensis, second the peugeot.

a buddy bought a C5 just the other week, already had to fork out nearly half the cost of the car again on repairs of things that have failed since he went to view it. whether he should have noticed them or not is debatable, but clearly component failure is common.

    avensis hands down

not because it's the only non french car

but because there i loads of them around for cheap second hand spares and you wont need a new peugeot or citroen engine every 6 months

you could also have a look at the merc estates they have a HUGE boot in them
or if you dont mind spending a bit more on petrol/diesel try a subaru legacy

Good point on the merc. Just seen this; http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1939224 Are they a good car? Obviously that particular ad says nothing about mileage so it could be galactic but i'd definitely consider one if the right one showed up.

i've only driven one of these once for a few miles so i cant say much
but it was nice and comfortable and even though it was a 95 the leather smelled really nice :D

the only problem is replacing parts they can be incredibly expensive

try get one around 120,000mls just incase

although a few local taxis have close to 300,000 - 400,000 miles on the clock so you might just get one of the ''good'' ones :D

Did you just make that up for dramatic effect or do you genuinely reckon Peugeot or Citroen diesels are that bad?

    it's obviously an exaggeration

but french cars are notoriously bad on the reliability front
i found this out the hard way

and also they must use prittstik to glue everything because everything breaks and falls off

The diesels in old 406s and C5s are top of the class really.

Diesel 75 estate if you can find one, auto would be ideal.

Is 2500 really Bangernomics? You can get excellent, relatively modern cars for 2500!

Diesel 75 Estate is a great idea. Love mine. But you'll struggle to get a good one for 2500

in fairness to the car, even though the bodywork/ chassis and interior were giving up the ghost bigtime, the engine had 170k miles on it and it was going strong :), best bit of the car!

french cars with small petrols are usually rubbish get a v6 petrol or a diesel and your laughing, ive 220k miles on my 98 berlingo and its fine ive never had the engine in pieces except for clutch/tb

http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1904940 Lot of car for the money rj but i really would need a hatchback at least. The diesel estate 75's are rare enough. (obviously a good car that people hang on to)

http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1783460 - wow 2k for all that. A good lookin car & all.

maybe i could live with a saloon.

They don't even have a split rear seat though, well mine doesn't anyway.

Ah dammit, that just wouldn't do. I have a ton of camping & fishing gear that is regularly used all summer. I'd need a big hatchback at least.

    Hmmm...roof rack?

Well I know love for French is not found here, but 406 was a cracking car. I owned one and it was like a tank. Comfortable, reliable, economical, cheap parts too. I sold it to friend 3 years ago, and it still drives like a tank. Damn, she even forgot nct was out in it, so she just booked it and went for it, came back with 2 year nct disc...

2.0hdi engines are great too, maybe French car. Quality is not best, but they knew a thing or two about diesels.

I would still go for carina... I am looking for one myself now. Only nuclear war will destroy those things...

You could also consider the Peugeot 306, same HDI engine as the 406 but much nicer to look at.
