Toyota corolla burning oil

hi brought a 00 corolla off my local mechanic around October time. made the mistake of not getting a second opinion as he would be the mechanic that my whole family go to.

just around xmas time notice the car was using a lot of oil.
went back to the mechanic and his solution was to add additives but that has made no diffince.
i'm probably toping up half little of oil every two weeks.

so yesterday i deiced to ring my uncle how deliver battery's to motor factors to see would he be able to get me a good price on 5 little of oil instead of just buying the one little of oil in the local four court. should point out at this i time i have only be topping up by 10w/40 oil. my uncle made a few calls for me and he told i should be using the more expensive 5w/30 and i should now give the car oil change to see if that makes any diffince.

also yesterday i deiced to get second opinion form other mechanic as the car is driving fine but want to make sure all of this burning oil was doing serious damage to the engine. he was of the opinion that the burning of the oil is not going to do any damage but there is noting that i can do to stop it burning oil he said that 10w/40 would be fine for the engine.
but when i go to put i true the nct that the car will probably fail because of this.

i brought the car with two years nct so thats not the concern at the moment any way.

do you think that changing the oil and putting in 5w/30 will make any difference are is the second mechanic right.
    thanks for any help

It's not burning enough to fail the emissions test, just keep it Topped up.

I second that. Just put in a tin of oil treatment also, Bardahl or STP.

    thanks for the quick reply's
do you think i should keep with the 10w/40
    are use the recommended 5w/30

Doesn't make a huge difference, I'd use the 5 30 and if it does not burn too much of it I'd stick with that.

If its a vvti corrolla they go through a liter of oil about every 1000miles easily and you need to keep an eye on it.
Go to the castrol.co.uk they have a database to tell you what oil you should be using in your car.

I think it was 10w40 but its being a few years since i owned one.

It will probably burn more 5W/30 than the oil you are using.

    The mk4 1.4 Golf isn't much better !
f its a vvti corrolla they go through a liter of oil about every 1000miles

The VW manual sais the same.
A few days ago, I posted this, about mine, basically exactly what You are talking about doing.

I had 10W40 in it, it was serviced 3 weeks ago and the oil was replaced with 5W30.

So far, althought 5W30 is "lighter" ,my golf doesn't seem to be burning as much of it compared to 10W40.

most nearly every manufacturer puts in their car manual that "a liter of oil burnt over 1000km's" is acceptable. to cover their arses so people aren't coming back chasing new engines on warranty and such.

them VVTi corollas had a problem with oil burning (as you now know), something to do with the (poor) quality of metal they used in the engine blocks. the problem is wear on the cylinders.

toyota recommended 5w30 at first, but then decided 10w40 was ok for our climate (or so my local toyota dealer says anyway), so if your car has been running on 10w40 from the get go then switching back to 5w30 wont do you any favours, you should stick with the 10w40.

previously i had a 1.4 corolla with ended up with this same issue after a while. i was topping up maybe half a liter after 200-250 miles. there are two ways out of it.

    1) you can carry on topping up the cars oil until the next n.c.t. at reasonable expense to your pocket (depending on your mileage) and hope that is passes the next one and that the problem doesn't become terminal in the mean time. at the levels of consumption mine was at, my corolla failed on emissions.

    2) when had my problem i got onto an engine rebuild specialist (who incidentally told me he does 2 or 3 of those engines a month) and what i needed to do was have a major overhaul. this included boring the cylinders, new piston rings, new valve stem oil seals, timing chain and oil pump (essential) and a new engine gasket kit. the whole work was quoted at around 1200 euro, half the price of the car, but if you go ahead with it, you know you have an engine in tip top condition and the car will do for a long time to come.

In my experience the oil burning issue with the the vvt-i engines cars is due to a mismatch between the cross hatching on the cylinder bore and the type of rings fitted. A rehone of the bores and a new/uprated set of rings from the new shape(04 on) corolla sorts the problem.

ok thanks every one for your help
would in be right in saying i would be best just do as i have being keep eye oil and toping up when it needs to be.

cant really justify the cost of spending 1200 on the engine of car thats 11 years old that i brought for 1500

i just sold mine and looked at getting one a year older with the previous 4EFE engine.

but if your not wild for chopping and changing cars and don't have money to throw at it then your only option is to keep topping it up and hope for the best.

The problem doesn't get any worse and will have no detremental effects once you keep and eye on your oil level.

For nct's just take the car for a good spin before hand so that its fully up to temperature and you shouldn't have any issues.

Hardly worth it for a 00.

On most cases, no. Thats why I posted.....

However some people consider it worth doing if you take the value of a car as its overall reliability, running costs, cost to change to a new car etc etc not just what people are willing to pay for one.

I just realised, that all toyota corolla have the same problem. It doesn't matter which type of oil you use,it eats up both.I tried 5w30 than 10w40,and we ended up replacing the catalytic convertor.
