Just spotted this service on the realex website:

    http://www.realexpayments.com/ie/business-solutions
    • €29/month
    • No Setup Fee
    • Number of Transactions included each month: 350
    • Excess Transaction Charge: €0.12

Not too bad I would say? Does anyone use realex, good/bad experience with them?

Yes, we recommend them a lot to our clients.

Don't forget though to factor in your merchant account costs!

I'm switching to them, but as above, add in 1.5% - 2.5% bank processing fee, possible monthly bank fee also.

You need a credit card merchant account before you can use any of the gateway systems. Ulsterbank / AIB / BOI - can take up to 6 weeks to organise especially if its a new business.

Other option is paypal, but costs up to 3.4% + transaction fee, but can be implemented in minutes.

Thanks Tom. Is it hard to get a merchant account setup? I'm with ulster bank, have a business personal account. Would you recommend going with paypal starting off and if I get decent orders going through, make the switch to realex?

Yopu're half way there if you already have a working relationship with Ulster Bank as half the battle is the credit report and for the bank to trust you. - Talk to your relationship manager, he'll get the streamline rep to call you and it should take about 3 weeks from then to have you set up.

It can be done quicker if the manager pushes it through.

We've been using them for years and love them!

We use them and have had no problems - I would suggest using 3D secure also. Some merchant account services insist that you use this for added security.

ok guys then can you clarify the two ways to go with setting up an online store.

    Method 1
The Company gets a Merchant account with their Bank.
Company Chooses a Payments Service Provider from examples shown by Web Developer
Company Chooses a Shopping Cart from examples shown by Web Developer

    Method 2
The Company Chooses a Payments Bureau from examples shown by Web Developer
Company Chooses a Shopping Cart from examples shown by Web Developer

    Method 1
    Pros
more payment options for the client
less expensive per transaction I think from looking at the various Payments Service Providers.
    Cons
    Longer time to setup
extra hassle for the non techie business owner who has to visit the bank

    Method 2
    Pros
I would be able to setup a Paypal Shopping Cart quicker and it would cost less than developing a shopping cart for the other solution.
    Cons
Paypal or WorldPay and would be more expensive per transaction.
    Not everyone likes Paypal

Have also used Realex (mainly the redirect model) for multiple projects and would also highly recommend them.
