    Hi,

Im doing my first triathlon in August, its a sprint one. Im a little anxious about the Open water swimming, Ive heard its very different to swimming in a pool. Is there anywhere I could swim to help me train?

Im looking for a group where it would be safe to train? Thanks

I'm not sure about anywhere near dublin with fresh water but there's plenty of sea spots. A few of us on here went to the bull wall a few times last summer which i'm sure we'll be doing again this year. Its nice and sheltered there.

It's not a lake, but I've been wondering about training in the inlet on the inland side of Malahide village. There is a watersports and boat club there but it's a pretty big area and really sheltered so figured it might be good for some low risk open water training.

Anyone got any idea if it's clean or suitable?

I dont know for sure but can be bad for jelly fish if the weather has been warm - so you are ok for now.

I generally (whenever i do open water swims) swim from portmarnock beach to low rock and back again. Once the tide is right and the chop is not too bad.

Sat and Sun from the Spring onwards, there are always people doing it.

+1 on jellyfish pretty much all around malahide.
The stretch of water you're referring to is used by at least 2 boat clubs - their traffic and others in the area means its a dangerous area to swim in - Im not certain but swimming there may not be permitted at all because of this.

Ive swam there once before as part of an open water training day but this was with the expressed permission of the Malahide Yacht club. It might be worth calling them and politely inquiring since its definitely one of the best spots that non-tidal in Dublin.

Used to do a bit in Grand Canal dock - hop in at Camden Lock and swim up to Ocean Bar. OK conditions, but I never figured out if you were actually allowed swim there or not...
