Anyone on here use this to find the cheapest price petrol in there area. There doesn't seem to be too many updating it recently, myself included.

I just saved 3c a litre between two garages within a few hundred meters of each other in Drogheda. Only squeezed in 39.3 ltrs so the saving was just over a €1 and I only fill up every 2-3 weeks but it all counts.

The iphone app is better than the website and I have nothing to do with them.

I don't bother, Maxol Station in Harolds Cross has been the cheapest in South Dublin for years :/

I find the big lit up signs in front of the garages displaying the prices do the trick for me, especially when they are only a few hundred meters apart as you describe.

I could not see the cheaper one though, it was 200 metres away round a corner. In my case tonight it was 200 metres but it could be 20 miles, there could be cheaper option.

But if you drive 20 miles to a station just because its cheaper then you have used the fuel(and more) that would account for the saving, so that would be pointless.

The only stations that would be of financial benefit to check the prices of would be in your local area or along your daily commute/drive and these are easily visible from the signs outside.

If could possibly be an advantage to someone who does alot of miles to different places every day but in general these people(delivery drivers, sales reps etc) will have fuel cards so it is also pointless.

Well Nissan is it not better to know the prices in ur local area before driving anywhere and just go to the cheapest one. Unless u actually have a crystal ball u would have drive round to each one the and then go back to the cheapest, that would waste more petrol than u would be saving. Example one on the crumlin road there is a texaco and a little further on a maxol at dolphins barn. I drive past the texaco first but I have no idea if it is cheaper than the maxol, but if I drive on to the maxol and it is more expensive there is no other garage on the rest of my route. To go back would waste any saving but if I know upfront I just stop at the texaco.

I have similar situation on the n2 I pass 4 petrol stations before Ashbourne and they are all on the route and within 8 straight linear miles of each other. Knowing the prices in advance means I just stop at the cheapest and I don't be pissed off 3 moles down the road after paying 3-4 cent more than I needed.

Its a silly arguement IMO, If you drive the same route regularly then you know which station is always the cheapest. I know which of the 6 stations closest to my house is the cheapest, I don't need to drive around to them all to check.

As for the N2 to Ashbourne, the applegreen and topaz just off the M2 roundabout are the cheapest by a minimum of 1 cent per litre over the other stations on the dublin side of Ashbourne. As you head on beyond Ashbourne the petrol gets more expensive untill you get to Ardee, which has the cheapest petrol I have seen. If you drive the route everyday with an interest in the fuel prices then the same stations will always be cheaper/more expensive then then next.

Like I said, if you were driving somewhere you weren't familiar with then it could be of use but most drivers would be looking at the prices at stations they pass regularly on their daily drive anyway. Maybe thats just me though...

Fair enough but if there was a filling station only slightly off your route that was charging several cent per litre less than the cheapest of the stations on your route, wouldn't it be handy to know so you could take a diversion once a week and save a few bob? It's the guys who are just off your commuting route who probably charge less in order to entice people like you to make an occasional diversion to top up.

On www.pumps.ie you can define a 'watch list' of 10 filling stations near you or on your way to work or whatever, then when you access the website you can see which of these stations is cheapest. I agree that you shouldn't be cruising around wasting juice to maybe save one cent per litre but if you can do this cruising from the PC or mobile phone then why not?

But if you drive 20 miles to a station just...........

I've driven a few miles out of my way for diesel. Not just because it's cheaper, but also to support those garages that wish to give decent value to their customers. If people don't support these places no-one wins because the market will favour the more expensive option.

Fair enough but it costs me about €6.50 to drive 20 miles urban so I'm fcuked if I'm gonna do that to save €1 on a fill!

If anyone has a Symbian Phone or a Maemo N900 could you please send me the *.sis or *.deb file for the pumps app.

The actual app is now gone from Ovi.com and replaced with crappy RSS feed app which is one per county, useless.

im trying to get the actual app back and also to re-compile it for Nokia MeeGo N9

    Thanks

    Colm

I'd rather support a well run garage. One where the air always works, has a toilet, nice staff, pressure washer that's not always out of order.
Although 2 cent more works out at 60 cent more for a fill for me. I'm not going out of my way for that
