Where do I begin. The thing that is stressing me out is once it's done. Bank, credit card, med card, PRSI, Credit union...sounds like a bureaucratic nightmare. Is it as arkward as it sounds?

I know a trip to dublin with your birthcert to change your name is first on the list. I could be wrong. It does sound awkward to be honest.

Thanks. Yeah I'm not really worried about changing my name officially but all the stuff that comes after sounds like a nightmare.

It's a bit of work, no doubt. I just made a list, typed out a quick letter on the computer, got all my account and other reference numbers together, and just did it. I think I sent out a dozen letters. It took a few days. You have something like a year to do it. You'll get it done! :)

Note that some institutions (notably financial institutions) will require you to present with photo ID (which is why one of the first things I changed was my passport). Having said that, I currently have a case with the Financial Ombudsman regarding the fact that my bank is telling me that I need to close down one of the accounts that I have in my old name. I fear that the rules may have changed - I fear that when you execute a change of name by deed poll, you now need to close down your old current account and open up a new one. I'll report back here when my case has reached a conclusion.

Thanks Deirdre.:) Yes, the actual changing name part sounds o.k. but what comes after it seems a bit daunting. I guess it has to be done. Having everything prepared and doing it in one swoop sounds like a good idea. Please do keep us in touch on how the bank account issue goes for you.

I found it very easy to change my name on all the various pieces of documentation. A quick phone call or letter was all I did. That said as D pointed out you may have some issues with your bank. Changing my name on my bank account was a doddle for me but that was some time ago. Hopefully D's case will be resolved swiftly and is a unique one.
