Hi, I've just agreed to sell my car privately and discovered that I have no idea where the tax book(registration certificate) is. I have the car for seven years and never needed it. I can get a replacement but have been told it could be two or three weeks coming back from shannon. is there any quicker way to get a replacement book?

Sometimes (depending on the age of the car) if you get the form signed buy the garda and take it to the nearest motor tax office they will give you a replacement there and then. Did it myself recently for an 87 car.

How recently did you do this and where?

I'm in west cork. Buyer saw car yesterday and agreed to buy last night. I then went to where I thought tax book was and could not find it. the original agrement was to hand over car on tuesday. I could take some time off monday get the RF134 signed by a guard and taken to the tax office. but someone told me that they have to be sent to shannon and may take weeks. Car is a 2001. if that makes any difference.

Couple years ago, i got car from car seller in rosscommon, never seen logbook, but i had hand write receipt that prooves i bought the car.
I bought car , and booked holiday journey after 3 months (ferry trip) to Europe.
Called to seller for logbook, he said, he post that logbook in same day, when i paid money, shannon said they never received. Week before i had to go, i called to shannon, and said, that i have booked journey, and didnt get logbook, without i cant drive car over board, ... then they send email with form what i have to fill up.... i had to bring car to dealer, and do win number check.... it was vw passat.. .so i brought to nearest vw garage, paid 50 euro for stamp on that form, then i had to get signature off solicitor.... which prove my identity (20 euros),... and this form and receipt post to Shannon.... and within 3 days i got my logbook, and i manage trip around Europe. In germany police checked my logbook, and i was pleased, that i had a logbook, otherwise would stuck probably in GE :D

Scanner1 I believe the turnaround should be a lot quicker than a couple of weeks. Its hardly as if they're seriously streched in Shannon at the moment The previous owner of my car which I bought privately had lost the VLC. He was a foreign national and was unsure of the procedure involved in acquiring a new one. I brought along the blank R134 when viewing the car on the assumption I was more than likely going to buy it, which I did. Seller duly filled out the R134 in front of me, popped it into an envelope which was addressed to Shannon and we went along together to post it...which was good enough for me seen as the seller came across as an honest guy and I viewed the car at his house also. I'm sure if you went to this trouble with the guy you intend selling the car to and you fill out the RF200 in front of him with his details as new owner, to have form ready to post when you receive the VLC back, this should pretty much be good enough for most but the very suspicious people.

I wonder could you get all done and dusted on the same day if you went along to Shannon in person with the RF134 and RF200? Anyone know if they will deal directly with the public like this, just like getting a drivers lisence at your local motor tax office?

I don't think the tax offices have the facility to print certs for a few years now.
I'm pretty sure getting one from shannon is the only option.
