Jury Duty

A friend of mine has been called for jury duty.
The problem is that they have been called for jury duty in their home town, but they are currently living and working 120 miles away because of the recession. I know jury duty is a civic duty and I agree with that and would do it myself no problem but due to the distance and the cost of travelling, etc, is there any hope of this person getting out of it.

Also, if they have to do it, is their employer required to pay them and are their travel expenses covered by the court.

I've heard stories where a person on jury duty may be called at say 9.30, and finish at 11.30 so are then required to go back to work or only be paid a half day's wages. This may happen on random days for a couple of weeks. In this case , that obviously would be unfeasible. Any advice? Thanks.

There was a similar thread not long ago. If you do a forum search you should find it.

Your friend can get out of it, if they wish.

I am living in Dublin and was called for jury duty in Wicklow (home town). I asked to be excused as I had just started a new job and mentioned I was living in Dublin. They said I was automatically excused as I was living in another region and took me off the register for Wicklow. Your friend will have to register again should they want to vote in the future.

I don't think travel expenses are included. You just get basic lunch and paid parking if you are chosen. But you might not be chosen straight away and therefore have to go in every day until you are either chosen or excused.

It's unlikely! If you have been convicted of a serious offence or have served a prison sentence of five years of more then you can't serve.
Even if it's a record for a relatively minor offence, you will probably be struck from the potential jury pool if you have any kind of criminal record.

I'm also dragging up this thread again.

I've been called for jury duty in Bray and I live in Wicklow. I see on citizen's information that there are no travel expenses. However, I have no income (I'm a student). Do I still have to attend?

I don't mind at all attending, but I simply don't have the money for bus ticket(s) or petrol for something like this.

Students can usually apply to be excused for jury service on the basis that they will miss coursework and such. You could additionally state that you have no income to pay for the expense to travel to and from the court. It's easy enough to get excused.

    Thanks for the responses :)

It's on during the summer so I don't really miss out on coursework as such, just study time.

I'll attach a note explaining that I just don't have the money for travel expenses but would be glad to perform jury duty in my local town where I can walk to a courthouse (if there even is one in the town!)

If Morgase can't go to the court, the court will come to Morgase!!

I've just been called but run my own business. If I don't go to work for 5 mornings a week there is no way the business will stay afloat. Is there a way to get out of jury duty in my case?

Search for some of the other jury duty threads, this question has been answered before.

I was called there during the year. I'm also a student. explained to them that I'd miss important course work and they took me off not a bother, very easy. Although, I'm expecting to be called again soon. My mate who is also a student said he got called, said he was a student, got off but has been called once a year like clockwork (he's still a student). Me wonders if you get it off, you don't autmatically get put to the bottom of the pile so to speak.
