Tax free allowance suddenly dried up

Hi all, wondering if anyone can advise me on this. Didn't get paid this week from work. My boss says I no longer have a tax free allowance and if he pays me, it'll all go on tax.
I work part time and claim job seekers assistance. I recently got a p60 from a previous employer, I don't know if thats relevant or not.
Any ideas why this happened, or how to get my TFA back?

    Thanks

    Hi,

It sounds like you are possibly being emergency taxed. This happens when your employer has not received a certificate of tax credits for you. Even if this was the case you would normally still have some take home pay as there is no tax rate/USC/PRSI amounting to 100%. Your employer does not have the right to withhold your pay due to tax credits.

I would advise you to contact your local tax office and explain to them that you want to have your tax credits and Standard Rate cut off point allocated to your current employment. They will then send both you and your employer a Certificate of Tax Credits. Once you receive yours I would advise that you give a copy to your employer so that they are aware that you know you have received it and will be expecting your pay to correct. At this stage any emergency tax you have suffered to date will be refunded.

However, if you were working for this employer in 2010 you may also be entited to a refund. When you are talking to Reveue ask them for a P21 Balancing Statement. If you are entitled to a refund you should then receive it. Please note that if you have under paid your tax in 2010 they will request payment.

Finally, are you in receipt of job seekers assistance or job seekers benefit. The first is tax-free but the 2nd is taxable. If you are in receipt of the 2nd you will need to keep some of your tax credits to cover this.

    I hope this helps.
