Hi all i had to drop college to get on the social welfare because money is extremely tight at home, and now i got my social welfare sorted, (NOT MUCH :( ).. And they siad theyd send me a letter saying what im entitled to, which i got and a a big white card with a tiny note on it, saying :*
YOUR FIRST PAYMENT WILL BE MADE ON TUESDAY 8/3/11 AND EVERY TUESDAY..*
please bring photo id, - which is fare enough, when collecting my money, but i didn't get my card send out to me, and iv to collect my money on Tuesday...

So im unsure if i go up to social welfare and they give me a card thingy? or do i go to my designated post office with my white card thingy with the note on it,?

and what do i do when i go into the post office on that day? ...

I thought they sent everyone welfare cards automatically when you're 17 or so?

    Anyway, http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/irish_social_welfare_system/claiming_a_social_welfare_payment/replacing_a_social_welfare_payment_book_or_social_services_card.html

If I were you i'd bring the letter and try explaining the situation to the person in the post office. Or even better, get a letter from the welfare office which says you applied for a card and confirming to the post office it;s ok to pay your claim without the card. just a guess though

Hmmmm, I'd go down to the social welfare office first thing on Monday morning. When I joined in december I was asked if I had the card that was issued to me back when I first moved to Ireland (2001) I said probably somewhere but as I had never used it before I may have lost it.

They gave me a form to take to the local gardai station to get a new card issued.

    Fortunately i found my card.

I'd suggest bring your passport or some photo ID with you when you got to the social welfare, just in case they ask for some.

If you're on Jobseekers Allowance it's simple what you're to do. You don't have your social welfare card, could be that you just never got one. Go down to the local office on Monday, go to the reception and say what the problem is. You'll be (more than likely) told to go to a reception for all dole issues. There, you'll explain you haven't got a card. You'll be given a temporary card, a yellow paper one. That will last you a month.

Now, hopefully it'll just be a case of the welfare fellow taking your details and posting out a proper card for you to use.

Meanwhile, you're to use that yellow card to sign on and collect money. For collection it's there at least three days so it's safe to get it anyday from Tuesday to Thursday (two days I know but just be on the safe side). You can collect any time from when it opens till about 5-10 minutes before it closes (near closing time the computers close down or something; basically you'll have to wait till the next day to get your money).
You just go in, show your yellow/white card (depending on what you have), you may be asked for I.D. You have your driver's licence which is perfectly fine.

You get your money, you'll be given a slip of paper to sign, sign it. You thank the nice post office worker and leave.

Now, if you're getting less than 185 (or whatever it is), you might want to take up a FÁS course as that will entitle you to get the full amount. The bonus is that you can learn some other things, too. The downside is it's usually a full time course so... you won't have a lot of freedom during the day.
