hornet would be better for foxes. 17hmr would be better for rabbits.
hornet would be quite a bit stronger than a 17, although you could shoot both these animals with both calibres

comparing a rimfire to a centerfire will be no competition

id be deciding on either a .223 or a .17hmr

the hornet is expensive to feed

    Out of the two:

The Hornet is by far the better calibre.

    A .223 on rabbits:eek:

A friend of mine has a 17 HMR and it's great for the bunnies and ok for the occasional fox but others will swear by them for the fox.

Well as the 22lr is not the best round for shooting foxes that only leaves you with a choice of one - the Hornet. Head shots with the hornet on the rabbits will leave you with plenty of meat to eat.

Stronger round is again the hornet so it leaves no choice in this debate on which to get does it?

i sometimes shoot bunnies with my .223. head shot is fine still plenty left to eat

if .17hmr or .22 hornet is your only choice then i would go with hornet. its a lovely round and ideal for your needs

i have a 22lr but i want a gun that can take a fox and can take rabbits without destroying the meat

if you have a .22 then keep it and get a .223 you will be sorted. and just to keep everyone happy you could get a .22 hornet a .204, .220 swift or a .223 any of which would be great for foxing.

i have 3 guns allready and if i get a 223 i will have to get rid of the 22 and i want somethig for foxes and rabbits thats why i want something like a .17hmr or a 22 hornet

I shoot with a hornet for both fox and rabbit, great for both. .223 might be a bit of overkill on the bunnies, would need a head shot everytime if your looking to keep the meat, but are very accurate. Why would you have to get rid of a gun if you buy one. i have several different weapons in varying calibre's all originally licensed in dublin city centre before i moved.

I presume cost of upgrading security.

    Get the Hornet.

there wouldnt be much of a difference between the hornet and the .223 though i dont think, security wise.

for mostly rabbits and the odd fox id say .22wmr or .17 hmr.

for mostly foxes and the odd few rabbits id say .22hornet or .223

He already has three guns. Buying a fourth moves him up a security level.

Who said you would have to get rid of one to get another.

    I have 4 and contemplating getting a 5th.

yes but getting a hornet also means moving up to the same level if he doesnt sell a gun doesnt it?

Hornet is unrestricted AFAIK. So you can have up to three unrestricted firearms with the same security level of basically "a gunsafe". You can also have "one restricted" firearm under the same arrangement, "a gunsafe".

From the posts I am taking it that he already has three unrestricted firearms:

Each firearm shall be stored in a gun safe which complies with BS 7558 and which shall be securely fixed to a solid structure.

Buying the Hornet in addition to those three means he has more than three unrestricted firearms moves him up a security level:

Each firearm shall be stored in a gun safe which complies with BS 7558 and which shall be securely fixed to a solid structure.
The place in which the firearms are stored shall
have an alarm fitted and the external doors to the
place shall be fitted with locks which comply with
    BS 3621.

Which would put the OP at extra cost IF there's no existing alarm and IF the door locks don't comply with the standard :)

i understand that bit John:) but its the having to sell the .22 for a .223 i dont get in his above post.

if he gets a .17 hmr or hornet it will result in the .22 having to be sold too, to avoid the extra security

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,271 ✭✭✭✭johngalway

Ah, yes, I see, missed that bit. .223 or Hornet, or Hmr, or another .22lr will all result in the same thing happening if security level upgrade cost is a consideration, yes. But he doesn't have to sell the .22 as a calibre if he's buying a .223, there would indeed be no difference between buying an extra .223/Hornet/HMR.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,615 ✭✭✭kildare.17hmr

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭thekevin4540

if i am changeing i will get a .17hmr how much would a second hand one be

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,615 ✭✭✭kildare.17hmr

how much have you got to spend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,576 ✭✭✭garv123

    what kildare.17hmr said.
you could spend from 300 too infinity depending on the make, model, accessories and SCOPE

the scope will be the deciding factor.
some spend the same of the rifle on a scope others spend double it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭thekevin4540

i will be tradeing in my cz 452 with bushnell scope and scilencer

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,615 ✭✭✭kildare.17hmr

id say another 400 along with your trade in would have ya a new cz in 17hmr if you like that rifle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭ormondprop

last box of bullets i got was 38 euro for 50 for the hornet so your talkin twice the price of the .17hmr but still one of the cheapest centrefire rifles and they are a lot better for knocking foxes than a rimfire
hornet has as much energy at 250 yards as a .17 does at 100

ya there for foxes alright, there the winchester 46gr, havent got to use any yet though. hornet ammo is usually around the 40 quid mark for 50 for remington and the hornady is abt 25-28 quid for 25, federal stuff is dear aswell, if i was buying i'd definately go the centrefire route, a .17 is only going to give you an extra 30-50 yards compared to a .22 for foxes, if it was me i'd get a .223 as you can use the cheap ammo for rabbits, i reckon if you get a .17 you'll eventually want a centrefire anyway

i agree if its gonnabe used for foxes mostly a centrefire is your best bet and id also go 223 but iv shot a few foxes a fair bit past 150 with my hmr and had no problems, shot placement is very important but i no my gun and am confident takin shots at that distance with it. that said im now in the market for a 223 because iv had to let too many foxes walk away because they were out of range of the hmr!

they way i look at it rimfires are for rabbits or if its a magnum or hmr they are ok for getting into lamping, but everyone i know who has one or had one wanted to upgrade after a while, the same as yourself, although if i was only allowed keep 1 of my guns i reckon it'd be the .22, definately gets the most use out of all of them, i dont think i will ever be without a rimfire, are you going to keep or trade your .17
