2004 VW Passat

    Hi,

I'm looking at upgrading to a 2004 VW Passat / 1.9 Diesel TDI / 130BHP / Highline. The car has around 120,000 miles, unsure when timing belt was done.

CBG.ie recommends about €6.5k while a local VW garage said no more than €4.5k for this made/model in general. What would be a reasonable offer for it?

    Thanks

I would not pay much attention to cbg's valuation. All they do is calculate the average price from all the 04 Passats listed on their site. If any of them are overpriced then the average price is going to be bumped up too. €6,500 is silly money for a 7 year old Passat diesel irrespective of the spec.

I would go with close to the VW garage's valuation however find out when the timing belt was done, I think it is every 60k miles on the VAG 1.9 TDi so at 120k it is either due or just done. If there is no proof (valid receipts, not tipex on the engine cover) then assume it is not done and adjust the selling price to budget getting it done.

There not to bad, but watch out for front wish bones wearing out( its the bushings that go) window regulators and water leaks which can kill the climate control box under the passenger seat(big bills). It won't set the world on fire i miss my E36,:( but i needed a diesel.

In talking to a few people it seems the '04s are going for more than their worth due to problems with the '05 and '06 models.

    They are good cars.

I sold my 98 B5 in January last year and I could have sold 20 of them I got so many calls about it. Literally put it up on dondeal on a Sat night and she was gone the Sunday at 11 in the morning!

+1 On the water ingress problem - est quote is 1000 euros if you need to pay for repairs......

Make sure it has the 5 speed box (not the 6-speed), although with 120k and issues should have been sorted.
CV joints, window regulators, wishbones and alternators are on the menu for the B5.5 Passat.
Good engine though with decent mpg. 6.5k is dream land stuff. 4k is what the car is worth. (if that)

i paid 5.5k for an 04 Highline last year with a full service history. I guess it depends on the spec. I got full leather, heated seats, reverse parking sensors, cruise control. I was and am very happy with the bang for the buck. A well looked after engine will run for years.

The water ingress problem is easy to check. There are plenty of guides online to show you how to do it. Probably take about 45 min the first time you do it....15min each time after.

Get VAGCOM and scan the car before you buy it. That will show up any faults and you can also check to see if it was clocked.

Look for the second key and if it is lost then bargain price down as it will cost a few hundred to get it replaced. If there is "no" second key then i would recode the key to the car or else you may wake up one day and find the car is gone . Think you may need Vagcom to do this but wont swear.

what would be the issues with the 6 speed box?
Got one myself and something is up with injectors and mpg, shocking bad mpg!
due a timing belt soon too, which will not be fun
