"Engine systems fault" -Focus

I've an '06 ford focus 1.6 petrol. Twice in the last week when I went to start it, it won't and displays "engine systems fault" on the LCD display with red lights flashing:eek:. I took the key out and tried it a few more times until it started. When it eventually starts, it displays "reduced acceleration" and the warning light for the engine, gearbox, battery and oil come on. If I turn it off again and start it it's fine and drives normally.
Does anyone know the cause of this or had experience of it?
The first time it happened I thought I just turned the key from 0 to start too fast but that wasn't the cause.
Hope to get it to a garage asap.

    Thanks in advance!

    Are they acting up?

Did the engine turn over while trying to start it?

Sorry, clocks are fine. It's like I'm not turning the key.
The radio, fans and everything stay on when I try to start it, the engine just doesn't turn over.

Might be worth getting the dtc codes read, as shes going into limp mode to prevent damage etc. Only ford have the correct vds scanners though. Other types of scanners might not find them.

Thought it could be doing damage but it's only when I try to start it like it's a loose connection or something because once it starts it's fine.
I'll try and keep driving to a minimum until get it checked.

    Thanks!

True. But a lot depends on the fault and whether it puts the EML on or not. If it puts on the EML light and is related to emissions then it will produce a code that will be read by an bog standard EOBD scanner. More often than not, the code will only be readable with a regular EOBD scan tool if it is NOT manufacturer specific, and these magic codes (usually between P1000-P1999) that will give you the best fault finding info on these things. Therefore you need IDS or a suitable high end scan tool to read these codes.

I have seen this "Engine Systems Fault" before with the car limping, and the codes I got at that time were:
P1001 Key on Engine Running self test not complete
P1101 MAF Sensor out of self test range

The cause was a MAF that was contaminated with oil.

OP, if the codes can't be got from the dash then the car will need reading with a suitable scan tool to see what's up. There are any one of a number of causes for your problem you are experiencing.
