In the form of a research grant what study would you do? What burning question would you answer?

I would carry out an RCT to see if magnesium supplementation could prevent gestational diabetes. We already know that Mg supplementation improves glycemic control in type II diabetics (and non-diabetics too) and women with GDM have lower intra-cellular magnesium than their normoglycemic counterparts. We have data from the US suggesting that most people don't eat the RDA of Mg so I'd like to see if this relationship was causal or not. GDM is a growing problem that affects up to 12% of Irish pregnancies and affects a variety of perinatal and maternal outcomes. My back of the envelope stats suggest that I need around 10,000 participants to adequately power this study so I might need a few million but a girl can dream. :)

What study would you design and why?

I think Prof. C. Sheen has that particular research area covered.

Do you mean make in profit or the original cost of the study? 'Cos there ar lots of small medical device companies in Galway doing R&D in this area with budgets nowhere near a billion. Small innovations sure, but incremental gains nonetheless.

What specifically would you like to design, for what? (you don't need to state any patentable ideas if you don't want to :P)

profit obviously lol :P, materials used in all of these for one, they use chromium cobalt right now in stuff like knee replacements, cheaper stuff can be used.

as with stents, some are using ferrous materials right now (316 L SS), cant get an MRI until the stent is endothelized. some are using different shape memory stuff now though nitinol etc, if you invested in this a while back you would be a billionaire by now :), most of the american population is gonna be having an angioplasty atleast once in their lives :)

That is the evil-est smiley face I have ever seen.

Sad but shockingly true, unless I get there first with my groundbreaking nutrition research of course

Actually, on the materials front, didn't they recently discover that MRSA cannot live on copper? So the obvious choice for hospital door knobs etc. Might be a good time to invest. :)

good luck :), research is hard work, its really not for me, if i had the money i'd deffo be investing in the bio med sector right now, it got the blessing from even bill clinton last week on CNN (forgot what the shows name was but he basically said bio-med engineering field is going to be the next IT field)

As an IT person who now works in the healthcare research industry, this is definitely true. Wealthy US and Japanese aging baby boomers are apparently driving a research boom. Feels like 1997 all over again.

Let Ireland default and see if we can survive, if not use the money to get us back on our feet, if we survive you can have your money back for medical devices, however i'll have changed economic history forever!

o/t Also C Sheen is a deranged man, who I pity. Furthermore, his drinking, I have no doubt is exaggerated and would be microscopic in comparison to the standard Irish pub 12pints a day alco, whom I served.

It would take a hell of a lot more than a million quid if Ireland defaulted.

Would this be research related or are you building some kind of doomsday machine?
