As above. am hoping to get a good efficient diesel car. Volkswagen seems to be the best option. Lets leave it at that. 2007/8/9 yr models
I hear the jetta is underpowered,is this true at the 1.8 or above models?
Which one is more fuel efficient for motorway and town driving?
Any other relevant details i'm missing welcome and appreciated!!!

If it is diesel the 1.9/2.0 TDI is common to both cars. The 1.9 is 105 BHP and was replaced with a 1.6 TDI in 2010.

It depends what you define as underpowered. What are you driving at the moment OP.

    Mazda 6 1.8 petrol comfort!
i'd take a lower powered car(Jetta) if it meant better fuel efficiency.
Dont want to spend more than 10000, can be pushed to more but there'd have to be a great incentive!

I would buy the 1.9 TDI as the 2.0 TDI gives a lot of trouble. The tax on both is the same after 2008. There is plenty of 1.9 units available for sale. You are better of with the Passat as you have a bigger more comfy car for the same price if not cheaper than a Jetta.

Cheers what about fuel efficiency or are they the same. Ive heard the jetta has the engine of a similar golf pulling more weight. Which model is meaner on fuel consumption?

There is dam all difference TBH. Expect 50mpg+ on either engine. The Golf/Jetta/Passat share the same engine of that year with the same power. There isnt that much difference in the weight either of the cars.

Thanks! having to question now whether there's a point in holding out on not getting the 08 model seeing as in four years any savings i'd have made on the 07 model would be offset by the difference in motor tax paid over the period!

Also is there any better mpg with the same engined golf!

Theres not really any difference. Try and aim for a late 07 at least because earlier models gave a lot of trouble. You will get a good 07 for 10K no bother. You will only save 300 a year on tax after so if you spend 13k on a 08 you will be 10 years making up the difference.:)

Deadly, thanks for doing the maths for me! Mine was obviously wrong! Will look around now and get that loan. The €50 would nearly be saved on petrol anyhow i reckon. Mazda is getting 34mpg and i'd have a new car. some garage might even give me 1500 for it!!

What year is the Mazda??. Make sure you get at least the comfortline spec if not the Highline spec.

You will surley get more than 1500k for the Mazda. They are very reliable except for the diesel.

I wish. I got paint made for it. Sprayed the area...badly...laquered it and now theres a layer of bad paint on the side of the car. Know any good ways of getting spray laquer and spray paint off a car!

Looked at a 1.9 Marine blue passat. 07 year for 11450 including trade in of my mazda!!! Still seems a bit high. Mileage on the passat is 120000kms

Edit: he had 13950 on the windscreen, when i checked it online, it was 12950, emailed about it and it returned to 13950!!!!

    So....had a look at this one http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volkswagen/Passat/PASSAT-1/201109201456244/advert?channel=CARS

Good or bad deal. Said hed take a trade on the mazda as well. dont know how much on the trade in. The highlines seem to be hard to come by!
Do the 07 passats play mp3 cds.
And is there much difference on the 1.9 and 1.8 models

Looking at a a Jan 07 1.9 TDI Highline Passat 56k miles with a cash price on the dealers list of 14,950. I have a trade in to go against this so the final price is yet unknown (minimum of 2k scrappage anyway). I went to take a look yesterday and the sales guy said he had another 07 Passat coming in, a 1.9 TDI Comfortline with 40k miles on it. The cash price for this will be 12,950. I'm going back on Tuesday to take a look at the second car.
Couple of questions....are the prices reasonable and is the Highline worth the difference in price? I've heard of trouble with older Passats - any idea what they give trouble with?
Also looking at a Volvo S40 with a good spec, also 07 diesel with about 50k miles on the clock, for about the same money. Any opinions on which is the better buy?
    Thanks!

Those prices for the Passats seem expensive. Here is a similar Highline for alot less money:

Thats true. They are prices you would have paid a year ago. I hate the standard Highline alloys. A Monte carlo or lemans pack really does them justice.

A lot of the Jettas you will see are UK spec too.

S model is the base in the UK
    plastic steering wheel
    manual aircon
    alloys
    4 electric windows
    remote locking
    electric mirrors

    SE model
    Cruise control
    Climate control
    leather wheel
    cruise control
    chrome around side windows
    auto lights
    auto wipers
    auto rear view mirror

    Sport
    Electric seats
    Heated seats
    Leather seats
    17" alloys

I have missed vital info here, but those are the differences as I see them.

I want to steer clear of private sellers to be honest...almost got badly burned a couple of years ago, so the preference is to go with a dealer. More expensive I know, but a bit of piece of mind I guess.

For the mileage mentioned, do the prices not seem okay-ish? hat would you expect a dealer to let a 07 higline go for with, say, 50k on the clock?

Does anyone know of anything to look out for with these cars or to specifically question the dealer on?

    Thanks.

Eh, the one I posted a link to earlier is from a dealer and includes a warranty.
