Wondering if anyone has done any distance learning writing courses, like the ones by the writers bureau or oxford? they are around 200-300 euro, and you do your own assignments, which are corrected by markers and then you are evaluated etc.

Thinking of doing something like that. Anyone have experience of these courses, or similar ones, good or bad?

Ha yea although i never wrote anything for write club yet. I have two poems actually why don't I stick them up?

But i'd like to do a distance learning thing, might give me some useful insights

I know someone who did a distance course, and got good results from it. But when she finished it, one of her instructors commented about how few people ever finish. Most do three or four exchanges and then slow up, and drop out soon afterwards.

Most people find it tough going and stop. You'll also have to do a lot of writing on aspects which may not appeal to you.

I'd go with Write Club or one of the many writing groups around. Where are you based? Someone will probably know of a writing group near you.

hey dude, you might want to try the creative writing course in the Open University.

    http://www.open.ac.uk/Arts/a215/index.shtml

It's a cut above in terms of price, but also status. The OU is recognised worldwide for its distance learning programmes, so if you're traveling or whatevs, this might be the ticket.

    good luck!

also, where the long-promised post to Write Club??

Hi ya i started the writer's bureau one about 2 yrs ago. I think it cost me e280. I stopped after the first assignment because i just felt it wasn't all it was made to be. I tried contacting a tutor to get a bit of direction and i had to go through about 4 people and i got nowhere. Now it's possible that the layout of the course didn't suit my way of learning and could suit you. However the open university is a world recognized accreditation so my money would be on that if i had done my research correctly

Inkwell (http://www.inkwellwriters.ie) are good, very focused on the market as well. Open University ones are often a good idea if you want to use the credits towards a diploma or degree qualification.

Best thing about distance learning is getting feedback from the tutor - it should be very straightforward to get in touch with them. Going through 4 people sounds absolutely mad!

In the States, Gotham Writers Workshops (http://www.writingclasses.com/) are very popular but they are pricy - worth looking at if you're into very specialist things though (e.g. they do a science fiction course).
