Fine Gael and Labour are suggesting that coalition talks are at an advanced stage. These are two very different parties but they are politicians so will come to some agreement. However the party faithful that will meet at the weekend are not of the Dail breed and might be more reluctant to agree on what ever their parliamentary party agreed with FG!

So will Labour get the go-ahead from their members to go into government with FG? Any Labour party members on here that might know how people are feeling about this?

A FG minority government backed by a few independents couldn't last long so if this doesn't work we shall be back at the ballot box before we know it. Thoughts?

Even if a coalliton collapsed before the end of the year it is higly unlikely that a FG minority govt would be beaten in a confidence motion. They would do a deal with independents or could accept support from FF so basically, no hope of an election for at least two years imo, barring, of course, some unforseen circumstances.

Fair enough but do you think Labour party members will support the motion to go into Government with FG?

What do you mean by unforeseen circumstances?

They had bloody well better get their act together.....it's what we voted for them for, and it took a number of years too long to get the other shower out!

We might be glad that the most corrupt and incompetent shower are sidelined, but we're not paying FG & Labour to sit on their asses or delay matters; they're paid to make it work.

I think LP members will support the motion. When it comes right down to it, the only chance of having policies enacted is from within Government, not outside of it. Rejecting the coalition could also be somewhat of a double edged sword for Labour, it may hearten those inside Labour who favour certain ideas, however, it may alienate a portion of "floating" voters who chose Labour on their pre election odds of getting into Government to enact those same policies.

Can't please all of the people all of the time.

Very unlikely to happen but if a quick election was called would it cost Labour as people tilt their preferences towards Fine Gael in the hope of stability. Or would it just return the same result?

    .

Not necessarily. You cant just make a general judgement like that, based on your own belief.

To be fair a large proportion of the population voted for Labour and also the exit poll showed something like 48% of people wanted a FG/Labour government. I didn't give them num 1 but I knew they were going to be in gov with FG and it was the outcome I expected of the election. The only surprise being SF winning 14 seats.

I'm just concerned that the Labour party faithful is going to say no and cause instability which this country can ill afford.

Read it again; I said that we voted for them to get their act together and work in the interests of the country.

You're hardly disputing that, are you?

If that requires a coalition, then it's their duty; if not, then fair enough.

But get it sorted, and quickly!
