This booklet about the Essential Driver Training (EDT) programme is aimed at learner drivers . Learner drivers whose first learner permit is dated on or after 4 April 2011 must take this driver training programme with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). The booklet has information to help a learner understand who the programme applies to, its’ content and purpose and how to go about taking EDT.

On commencement of the Essential Driver Training (EDT) Programme the learner driver will receive this EDT Logbook from their ADI. The EDT Logbook provides an important record of the lessons completed. In addition it provides advice in preparing for lessons and suggestions on ensuring an effective learning process.

Booking my test for two weeks time to get it done before this change.

So I can save myself the hundreds of euro this new " Beneficial course" is going to cost

If you have your learner permit already this does not effect you. It only effects people who get their first learner permit from the 4th of april onwards.

Its worth noting also that anyone whose learners permit or old provisional license has expired by more than 5 years will have to undertake compulsory EDT.

Cheers for that, the new regulations are causing 100001 different stories to circulate.

Down for test on the 23rd of March

The information received at ADI meetings regarding the EDT is as follows:
    • The EDT (12 mandatory lessons) are there to help you learn as a new beginner driver.
    • It is not a guarantee you will be a competent driver after.
    • You will need practice between your EDT lessons.
    • You will need to learn as much as possible before you take an EDT lesson.
    • As a new learner (with no experiences) you will not on completion of your EDT be at driving test standard.
    • You may (in my experience you will) need to take extra lessons after or between your EDT lessons.

I have put this up so that learner drivers KNOW what to expect.

    Please Note:
ALL ADIs attending the meetings were concerned that you the learner will expect your driving would meet driving test standard on completion of your EDT; we were also very concerned that you would believe you are a competent driver on completion of your EDT. In reality signing off (ADI stamps your logbook) on your EDT is only to say you completed the lessons and is in no way a signing of competence.

I hope I have made this clear because this issue lasted hours at the meetings.

My first learners permit will expire at the end of May 2011- when I apply for my second permit (with proof of having sat and failed the test frown.gif ) will I then be part of the EDT regulations even though I wont be sitting my theory test again etc?? I really didnt think I would because it won't be my first learners permit (first time) but now I am not so sure! If waiting till may to renew will mean I have to go through all this, I will try renew my permit- although early - asap !!

Any help on this would be really appreciated !!

You've nothing to worry about ;)

The EDT is only applicable to people who's 1st learner permit is issued on or after 4th April 2011 or for those who's LP has lapsed 5 years and need to resit their Theory Test

An ADI can assume the role of the sponsor

Although the ADI would be looking to get paid for their work as a sponsor, probably at a lower rate though. I would suggest looking harder for a sponsor. Asking more pleadingly. They must know someone with a full licence.
