The Hackescher Markt area is nice, near the Museum Insel area, lots of restaurants and bars, and young folks. Not sure about hotel or hostel availabilty there though. There's a Radisson, but it's pricey.

We stayed in the alexander platz area which is just a 2 minute walk to hackescher market. Great location for resturants, shops & transport. We stayed in one of the motel one chain. It was a fine hotel but room was a bit small.

Spent a few days in Berlin last year and visited this concentration camp. Was apprehensive about going but it turned into a good trip. It's only a short journey by rail from the City.

berlin is a really spread out city and there isn't any defined nightlife area as such, if you are on a budget you could do worse than stay in generator hostel out in the east side of the city, has its own bar that stays open late with happyhour :D

in terms of what to see, obviously brandenburg gate, Reichstag, tiergarten (which are all close to one another), check point charlie, east side gallery (which is the longest still standing piece of the berlin wall approx 1km in length), berlin cathedral, olympic stadium, Fernsehturm (which is the giant tv tower in alexanderplatz, get there early to avoid a long wait to get up), museum island

was there last year, stayed in the radisson (amazing). the city itself its beautiful and even walking past buildings riddled with bulletholes gives you an odd but nice feeling. would defo take the trip to sachsenhausen. its in a town called oranienburg north of berlin-bout a 40min train trip.

Stayed in the radison when i was there. Rent a bike from under the tv tower and go round a few beer gardens. The guys in the bike shop will tell you where's best.

Wow, did anybody not stay in the Radisson? The fishtank was one of my highlights...OP, if you are in the area, pop into the Radisson to see a cool giant fishtank with an elevator shaft inside it...:)

DDR Musuem in the Musuem Insel is excellent.
Also, if you're into history, there are a few Russian tanks in the Tiergarten behind the Brandenburg gate.
Berlin is so massive, even if you stay in the city centre (Mitte), that's still loads. :)

Hi OP, The public transport system in berlin is amazing so you are really never more than half an hour from anywhere in the city. I Would recommend staying somewhere quiet as the pubs have locals who love foreigners and will talk all night with you. This was great for us as they gave us all the best tourist information! Also this pub sayed open for 23 hours a day!
