Hi people, Well I was gonna buy a car off a friend but in the end I have decided not to.

So I am looking for a starter car really (i am not a learner just not driven in a while) I don't wanna spend much maybe €1200? I'b be happy with somthing like a 1999 or a 2000 would be great.. Would a dealer have cars that cheap for sale at their forcourts? or would I be better off going for a private sale?

Also, I am unsure about what car to be looking out for, I was thinking maybe somthing like a vw or nissan just somthing reliable:D My maximum is a 1.4 engine btw

I have never bought a car before so I would appreciate some advice..

On your budget you should get alot more car for your money by buying privately. Cars in this price range from dealers generally tend to be either sold as seen (no warranty) or come with a minimum warranty.

Just have a good mechanic check the car over before buying it.

Not trying to be funny or anything, but I wouldn't be ruling anything out at your budget. More desirable cars going for that amount are more likely to be clunkers, as they'll have taken a longer time (or heavier usage) to get to that price.

How long do you want the car to last? A car like the above polo might give you two years with a single service in the middle, depending on your usage. A clunker that you like might double your budget over 6 months without you ever intending it

Well after spending the last few hours going to several dealerships I am on to a few good leads.. Ironically one of the car dealers had a very nice little 00 vw polo coming in on monday so i will go back to look at that.. He said he can do me a deal since a family member bought of him recently..

I only really need the car for about 2 years mate,I want a little starter car to get back into driving:D If the polo dosnt work out I think I might be better off going private:cool:

Gearboxes are very soft on that vintage of Polo so make sure it goes through the gears with no issues, also have a mechanic check the car over as I'd imagine an 11 year old car will not come with much in the way of warranty from a dealer.

Ye mate, I have been told to stay away from VW of that age because apparently they notorious for giving trouble? i would like a lil micra but i just can't find any in the dealerships

Which is another reason you should be looking at buying private.

Thats a Golf and I think you missed the line "car requires engine". Those 1.4 Golfs are rubbish. But good god don't even touch a Lupo either. My sister had one and could not wait to see the back of it. Nothing but problems.

From what I hear ya can't fault them and they seem to be the perfect car for me atm.. I have looked through gumtree and there was one there but it has gone so I think I might even have to bump up my budget to maybe 2000.. Now all I have to do is find the car :D
