right so making the switch to CDJs from serato, and am wondering what is the best way to organise your cd wallet? What do the regulars here who DJ have them like? I play stuff like tech house, dubstep, electro house, minimal etc. if it matters.

I dunno I just prefer using CDJs than serato/traktor, plus most clubs/bars have CDJs so want to prepared and used to CDJs. I can still hook up my CDJs to traktor/serato and use them as a midi controller in the future if I want though.

I wouldnt go that far, especially with MP3 CDJs and CDJs that take USB drives and can control traktor/serato by USB.

But anyway, anyone have some thoughts on the OP?

I moved from Traktor to CDs, never regretted it.

Organising CDs is a bit of a bollox, especially as you can organise your whole wallet beautifully, but any music you buy after you organise it is just gonna be thrown in chronologically.

I have it seperated into genres, and within that by BPM. The BPM is really handy to know, because if you're playing at 132, and throw in a track at 120 you're only going to waste time having to find a different track.

Within genres I also sometimes group tunes by style, like find 5/6 with a common element, like if they're bassline heavy, or all have 90s shuffle hats, or have big squeaky leads, and put them on the same CD. Then you'll know where to find them when you think of them.

As for tracklist, what I do is the following:

    1) line up the columns in itunes with track number, title, artist, BPM, and drag the columns together so there's no unneccessary space

    2) Take a screenshot of that

    3) Open it in preview (or the PC equivalent) and resize it to 12 x 12

    4) Print

That gives you a perfect tracklist to fit in your wallet, and is much quicker then writing them out.

Yeah I was thinking of doing the BPM one, but what do you do if you want to find a track by an artist but cant remember the BPM it is? What about alphabetical?

The BPMs are only sorted into small sections of genres, like 4-5 CDs at the most, so you get to know the genres and what tracks are in each section pretty easily.

Is bpm really that necessary, its hardly gonna vary that much unless your jumping from house straight to trance.

Burn cd's as if you're buying records.5-10 a month, that way you will know them all inside out and wont need to organise them.Makes sense for me

Well you could easily have a house track at 115bpm, or at 132. That's way too much of a jump to mix.

You should organise your music to accomodate the way you play. Whatever comes natural, there's no proper way. I have a cd wallet full of track which is half organised into genres and most current tracks, then i have a empty cd wallet, and when im gigging ro going anywhere where i may play, i load that wallet in the way ill dj. I use genres, because i play between alot of them. But if your just a house jock then spliting your wallet into start of the night, middle of the night and then end would be grand.

But, whatever is easiest for you bro...

I have seperate cd cases for commercial djing and for what I deem proper djing. Twould be a handy thing to start of with two cases if your doing commercial nights and underground nights.
