I never heard of this. Have you followed the water back up the system. For example is the water green in the attic tank. If so it has no connection to the showering area.

Is the water draining completely out of the tray after use or does it stay in it , if there is some lying in it , it would cause discolouration over time .

ive sen the water going green before if the copper pipes are not earthed and also if the water is acidic it can cause the copper to leech of the pipes.

if it is copper eroding the pipes - is this a bad thing other than cosmetically ?

I dont think your right on the earthing. It has no signaficance. The earthing is protect us using the sink not the pipes.

Oh I've heard about something similar to this in college, except the green stain was in the sink bowl.

There's a possibility that you could have an excess electric current passing through your copper pipes into your water system.

I remember I was told a story about this man who did a lot of DIY on his house. He connected the earth wires of the electric system to the houses plumbing (copper pipes) as you do normally, but then a lot of green deposits started forming around the sink bowl and I think the mans wife started to feel sick.

They then had their water tested and it was found to have massive quantities of copper oxide (green) in it and this could only be due to the recent electrical work that had been done. Apparently voltages being transfered from the earth wires to the copper pipes were allowing a lot of copper ions to be transfered into the water system.

Interesting first post. I seriously think the notion is off the wall though.
To suggest that electricity is passing from the earth back up through the wireing into the water and back to earth is rewriting the science books.

However i would enjoy being proved wrong on this one. I suppose if a third person says it the old rule applies...

Say it enough and it will stick
