Does anyone know a butcher in Castlebar or South Mayo where I can get things like ground veal, ground turkey, venison, you know things other than streak and chicken breasts and sausages. Thanks.

Id also like to know where I can get some decent cheeses, pecorino, fontina, gruyere, mascarpone and sheeps cheeses.

I think you will be doing well to get these in Mayo! The only place I can think of is in Dublin - Downey's of Terenure.

    Very specialist......

You would probably only get the veal in a supermarket, I was asking my butcher about some recently and he said it's impossible to get.

We've been able to get venison and some other (relatively) exotic meats, but only with plenty of notice and usually frozen.

There's a good cheese selection in Rua in Castlebar including many of the types you mention. The cheese is top quality but is pricey....

Actually on the subject of butchers, is there such a thing in Mayo a factory shop butcher?

My sister lives near a one there in Clane and the value is incredible for chicken and meat and does great deals.

Theres a butcher down beside Lyons' shop down past the Welcome inn.(Pat Carolan is his name) Lovely fella to deal with. Not 100% will he have what you're after but its worth a try. His father owns the abattoir out the newport road so as you can imagine you wont fault anything. Or you could try Hopkins' across from Dunnes.
