I have a 2 and a half year old Toshiba Equium u400 145, running on Windows Vista.
Since last night, it seems to have been getting as far as the log in page. I enter my password, press enter -that doesn't work initially so I press the arrow on the screen.
Nothing happens for about a minute until the screen goes nearly black, with the curser still functioning, but nothing else.

So now my laptop is frozen, and all I can do is wait for the battery to run out, charge it up and try again.
Would anyone be able to help me figure out what's up, or how to fix it?

Will it start in safe mode

Hi Busi, (seen you on some other forum somewhere before :) )

The first step would be to try to boot to Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration from the Windows Advanced Menu.. You get in to this menu by tapping the F8 key just before windows starts to boot... It might take you a few goes to get it, but you will you know are at the right menu when you see this.. :

You should try the Safe Mode and Last Known Good Config options first..

Were you installing anything or did any errors occur before you started getting this error..

Thanks guys, I'll try Safe Mode later on and see if that works.

I wasn't downloading/installing anything. Other than it running a little slower (including reading hardware like a broadband dongle or an iPod) there wasn't anything wrong with it, but then the night before it was disasterously slow.

Last night was the first time that it really went to pieces.

oh and one other thing you could try Busi, the profile sometimes get corrupted, so you could try logging in as a different user... There is a default Administrator user, but you will need the password....

Shure I'll talk ye through it on the Late Late Show thread later on .. ;)
